EPIDEMIOLOGY -THYROTOXICOSIS
THYROTOXICOSIS refers to the clinical syndrome resulting from excess thyroid hormones in the blood, regardless of the source. It is most commonly caused by Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular #goiter, and toxic adenoma.
GLOBAL PREVALENCE:
PREVALENCE: Approximately 0.5%–2% of the general population.
INCIDENCE: Varies by region and iodine intake; 20–50 cases per 100,000 people per year.
AGE AND GENDER DISTRIBUTION:
More common in women (female:male ratio ~5–10:1).
Most cases occur between 20 and 50 years of age.
#Graves' disease peaks in women aged 30–50.
Toxic nodular goiter is more common in older adults.
GEOGRAPHIC VARIATION:
Graves’ disease is more prevalent in iodine-sufficient areas.
Toxic multinodular goiter and toxic adenoma are more common in iodine-deficient regions (e.g., parts of Africa, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe).
Higher prevalence noted in autoimmune-prone populations.
RISK FACTORS:
Genetic predisposition (family history of autoimmune thyroid disease).
Female sex hormones
Smoking (especially in Graves’ ophthalmopathy)
Stress, infections, and postpartum period (triggers for autoimmune thyrotoxicosis)
Iodine exposure (e.g., iodinated contrast, amiodarone)

POSTPARTUM THYROTOXICOSIS: Occurs in ~5–10% of women within 1 year after delivery.
