My View about Royalties💡
For #NFT collections, I believe royalties are really a good business model. But i have to say the "enforcement" of royalty fees is not real, because it is not actually protected by smart contracts, but rather relies on the support of marketplaces, which may be not sustainable.
🐂In a bull market, royalties can attract more creators and increase the size of high-quality assets, attracting more new users and increasing marketplaces’ profits.
🐻In a bear market, there are no new users, and existing users will jump to the marketplaces with the lowest transaction costs(market fee+royalty fees), making it easier to think of reducing royalty fees (rather than reducing market fees) to ultimately reduce transaction costs and retain users.
Fundamentally speaking, we cannot guarantee that any company can always maintain a decision that is not beneficial to them in the long term. Royalties have had this problem from the beginning, it's just being exposed in the current stage.
However, I don't believe that royalties will disappear permanently. It is still a dynamic and phased strategy, and its positive and negative effects are very obvious in different market conditions. We can still expect that when the market comes back, the marketplaces like @opensea will survive the difficult period and stimulate creators' creativity again, by bringing back the royalties.
For an NFT startup team, royalties are currently a strong PARASITIC business model, so you must start thinking now about how to build business models beyond royalties, such as peripheral products (like @pudgypenguins ), gamification(like @coolcats @CyberKongz), animation(like @Azuki), IP authorization(like @BoredApeYC), etc.
In the other hands, If you are unable to sustain your project without royalties, you could try the following methods in the context of optional royalties:
1️⃣Rank the paid royalties and regularly incentivize top payers, such as token airdrops, reputation bonuses, physical rewards, advanced identities, etc.;
2️⃣Establish your own NFT marketplaces and shift from a royalty model to a transaction fee income model;
3️⃣Ban the marketplaces that do not enforce royalties (like Yugalabs, but not recommended);
4️⃣Issue new series of collections (high risk currently).
