The Second Task - Part 1 -
Dracaena Malfoy descended the steps from the Serpentine Corridor with lead in her heart and a weight to each step. Worry painted every new shift in her expression, and though her robes bounced with every bit of her canter in their usual manner, her heart just wasn't in it to keep her nose held high.
She was worried, and as was the latest norm it all had to do with that blasted boy Potter and his involvement in the TriWizard Tournament. She understood why, of course. The Unbreakable Vow that had been placed on him and those nightmares that haunted him and his staunch and foolish and misplaced Gryffindor pride all made it impossible to refuse. In truth, she loved that latter part of him as well, loathe as she would ever be to admit to Saint Potter and his overloaded ego that she cared for any of him as much as she truly did.
Still, she'd helped him as much as she could. Far too much, frankly-- already were rumors beginning to circulate around Slytherin that the Queen Serpent's heart had been swayed somehow by The Boy Who Lived. Though, thankfully for herself, she was able to twist and sway said rumors by way of witty remarks and dismissive huffs.
It was all a ploy, she'd told them. A ploy to crush him, to lull him in and finally seize him within her grasp. After all, if Malfoy helped Potter, would that not forever keep him in her debt? That's what she'd said to Pansy, Crabbe, and Goyle when they came to ask her, and, judging by the impressed looks on their faces, it seemed to have worked wonders.
Which brought her again to her anxieties over their recent... deeper involvement. A fresh and peculiar situation which had brought with it its own challenges, and which she knew would require much further care, lest she make a mistake.
But he just brought it out of her, that heedlessness. He made her reckless. No, more than that, he made her stupid! Turned her an utter fool who yearned for nothing more than him by her side. One that knew she flew far too close to the sun, yet stubbornly refused to stop spreading her wings to its glorious and warming rays.
Down at the bottom of the steps, she turned to the left, and there at the edge of the staircase did she find what she was looking for. She'd been summoned in the midst of class by way of elvish apparition, bid to come to Professor McGonagall's office as soon as she was able to. Of course, she'd made haste in doing so, wondering and partly worrying the whole while the reasons why she might be summoned.
When she knocked at the door, Minerva's sweet voice called for her to enter, and as she did the anxiety grasping at her heart spiked.
McGonagall's office was just as she remembered, yet felt somehow different. In all the times that she'd been to, be it for questioning or congratulation, its rustic atmosphere had never stood out to her quite as much as it did now. It was a cozy little study, with a large and welcoming fire surrounded by chairs that you'd have to try to not sink into, and a comparatively tiny desk which overlooked a window to the Training Grounds and the Quidditch Pitch.
At that desk Professor McGonagall sat whilst facing the door, but it was the figure beside who caused that spike in Dracaena's stomach. Albus Dumbledore stood there, as tall and imposing as ever, with his hands placed placidly behind his robes and his eyes looking to hers with the warmth and kindness that no child in Hogwarts had ever known him not to carry.
Dumbledore gave her the lightest of winks, and the gesture alone made her stomach twist, forcing her to hesitate. She did so for a second too long, for McGonagall's bemused voice raised an octave to match the cock in her brow.
"Miss Malfoy. Concern and corral yourself not, you are in no sort of trouble. Now, would you be so kind as to come in? We've a matter of highest importance to speak with you."
She shuffled her way inside, closing the door behind her and pressing down upon her robes to still them before crossing the small room towards the pair. "What is the meaning of this?" She asked, a bit more defensively than she wanted to.
"It concerns The Second Task, Dracaena." Came Dumbledore's baritone voice, smooth like honey.
They'd found out. They'd found out about the two of them sneaking into that bloody bathroom, and now she was going to be made a fool of and Father and Mother would be told and everything would be ruined.
"What of it?" Dracaena's voice sounded hoarse.
Dumbledore smiled, and with a slight puff of his robes he spoke.
"Would you consider yourself important to Harry, my dear girl?"
She frowned, deeply. Her chest swelled with pride at the question and her arms crossed at the chest and, despite her mind screaming at her to stop, a much louder one forced her to say it plainly:
"Yes. Far moreso than--" She bit her tongue. "--any of his orbiters."
The pair looked to each other, a knowing look shared between them, and McGonagall continued.
"Then we've a proposition to you, Miss Malfoy. One that you should consider with caution and care."
----------
Hard footsteps echoed up the stairs towards the Gryffindor tower, each one clacking rapidly against the stone. They came from cheap hand-me-down shoes worn over handmade wool socks, and worn beneath a long and frumpy skirt and winter robes. The girl who wore them was thick set, with long and messy red hair which fell over her head in near bushy layers and which was covered up by a thrice-handed down cap which clearly hung a bit too loosely over her thick brows.
Her skin was pale, freckled at the visible points of her cheeks and likely further everywhere else, and her eyes were blue and pretty and her usually soft and homely features twisted into a huffy, pouty little scowl. She was Veronica "Ronnie" Weasley, and she was on a warpath.
"Banana Fritters!" She cried out to the Fat Lady, who squeaked and swung open the door before her. Soon after did she step forward, rushing past the steps and up through the Common Room where only a few students of her House were left.
"You!" She called out to a mousey looking boy maybe a year or two beneath her, who startled in the midst of his studies and scrambled to his feet. "Where's Harry Potter?!"
"Potter? Oh-- he's asleep, upstairs. I s-saw him there, I think."
"Thank you!" She enunciated, stomping up through the commons and towards the spiral stair-case.
"Hey, wait, I don't think you're--" But she was already gone, rushing up those steps whilst thankful that there was no sort of security enchantment to bedevil girls attempting to rush into the boys' rooms, as was the case the other way around.
A few other boys were there, two of whom panicked as she came in, and two that merely gave her a nod and a glance and a "Hey, Ronnie!" as she stormed her way forward, towards his bed.
Veronica bit at her lips, let out a long and deep sigh, and pressed her hand against her temple.
He was asleep. The buffoon was asleep!
Harry Potter lay on his bed, sheets slightly strewn about to show that he'd had trouble sleeping. His eyes were closed, his lips slightly open, and his hair was a right mess.
He looked so cute, like this. The idiot.
The girl took a deep, deep breath... and CLAPPED her hands upon his shoulders.
"WAKE UP!"
Harry startled, letting out a yelp and pushing away from her and rolling off the bed and against the floor with a harsh thud. "You're late, you fool! Everyone's already assembling at the Black Lake, and everyone's asking for you! What are you doing?!"
"Wha-- what?!" Harry groused, shaking his head and looking around himself. He groaned, pressing a hand against his messy hair and lifting himself up quickly.
"You heard me!" Ronnie practically hissed, "'Vicki' and 'Flour' and Cedric are all there already, getting told what's what and what's for while YOU are laying here sleeping! And on top of it all, I can't find Hermione anywhere! So--" She stomped forward, pulling at his bedside drawers so harshly they made loud and screeching squeals (which earned a couple of 'woah hey!'s' from the other boys in the room who were gleefully staring at the show) and grabbing haphazardly at his clothes before throwing them at him. "--get dressed, and hurry up! Or I'll drag you down by the ear!"
Harry did just that as the girl left the room, and before long the two of them were sprinting down the moving stairs, well on their way to the Black Lake.
"Why were you even still asleep? Did you not set an alarm? I'm pretty sure there's like three dozen clocks in that Common Room!" Ronnie said, as the two of them sprinted down the road, the slowly melting snow from the snowy chill now giving way to freezy breezes which seeped deep into one's bones.
"I couldn't sleep last night! I must have slept through my alarms, or something!" Harry retorted, panting through his teeth as they made their way down towards the great Lake.
"Well you picked one hell of a day to do that, I'll tell you that much! Really Harry, what would you ever do without me?"
"I... I don't know, Ronnie! I really don't!" Her heart skipped a beat when he said that, and she slapped him on the shoulder for it, cackling and furthering the pace of her sprint.
"And where's Hermione, anyways?" His curiosity extended to more than her, of course, but he refrained from asking further when he knew damn well Ronnie wouldn't know.
"I've no idea! Looked for her all over, too. My guess is she got invited by 'Vicki' again. Probably makin' kissy faces at him as we speak!" There was a certain hint of venom in Ronnie's voice, though it was certainly of far lesser sorts than she'd shown over the subject before.
Down the path already did a crowd hundreds strong coil towards the Lake from the hillsides, with banners and loud cheers and songs meant to both encourage and deride the schools and their present Champions. Harry and Ronnie cut through those crowds, with the red-headed girl in front of him, pushing and shoving through people with quick bursts of "Champion coming through!" and "Move, come on!".
Somewhere by the middle they passed Fred and George, who sat making bets with half the student body and even some of the visiting patrons from other schools and the visitors of Hogsmeade and the Wizarding World press.
The twins waved to the pair as they passed, though they did so for only a moment, busy as they were. Beyond them, Neville and Seamus could be seen enjoying an exotic snack between them, their stuffed faces exclaiming and pointing towards a cut in the path for them to take.
"Break a leg, Harry!" Seamus cried out, to which Neville added: "Or don't, preferably!"
Down past the hills and towards the lake's dock were the main bodies of faculty and family and the Champions themselves, all of whom looked at Harry with different levels of annoyance as he arrived.
Ronnie and him nearly fell as they stumbled down the hillside and onto the wooden planks, the both of them utterly out of breath. "I... I got him!" Ronnie exclaimed, clapping her best friend on his back and squeezing there, at his shoulder. "Found him, Professor!"
McGonagall let out an annoyed sigh, whispering something about bumbling, befuddled and bamboozling baboons before making way towards Harry. She pressed at his shoulders and fussed at his hair, and after a moment ushered him towards the side of the dock, where a small changing tent had been set up where the Champions could make themselves ready for the trial ahead.
It was as he was entering its lapels that Harry suddenly realized something. Something that came to him as a pang of sudden dread in his chest.
He hadn't seen her. Not her, not those who orbited her, nothing. Not a lock of beautiful golden hair, or a flash of disarming silver eyes, or even the sound of her voice, cutting through the crowd as it'd always had.
Dracaena was nowhere to be seen, and as Harry's mind raced from realization, the Song once more echoed in his mind.
And all it did was further drive that sinking pit of dread into his stomach.
