So this one ended up being a very pleasant surprise. Mind you, this is coming from someone who's not particularly a huge Alicia Keys fan. I've always admired her talent, think she's a great player and singer, but beyond owning a few sample libraries for her studio piano's I've just never really delved into her musical catalog. My familiarity with her music doesn't really go beyond the obvious radio hits pretty much anyone would be familiar with.
All that being said, the show was pretty phenomenal. It's essentially a semi-autobiographical story about her late teen years in NYC. While the story is relatively simple in scope, it's deeply emotionally engaging and highly rewarding.
The real standout of the performance, to the point of outright flooring me, was the young lady who played the lead (Ali). Maya Drake, at the age of 18, absolutely slayed the role and was vocally stunning. The supporting cast were all equally impressive and shined when given their individual moments.
Regarding the technical aspects of the show, the sets are relatively simplistic as the story primarily takes place in and around one apartment building. The pit musicians are onstage for the majority of the show basically built into the stage left rear of the set. Instrumentation is what you would expect for the genre. Two keyboard players, bass, guitar, percussionist, and drummer. All were great and the music was on point throughout. FOH mix was rich and full, and a huge shout-out to the LD as the lighting was a strong player interactively in the show.
Given this is more of a modern style jukebox musical, I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who's maybe on the fence regarding what their impression of a traditional Broadway show might be. Much like Hamilton/Rent/Once or the like, this isn't your grandma's Broadway if you catch my drift. If you're already a Broadway fan, or even more so an Alicia Keys fan, this is an absolute no-brainer. If it's ever in your neck of the woods I'd very highly recommend checking it out.
