In August 2014, I was deployed to Iraq as part of Australia's Special Operations Task Force. We were located in Baghdad, with the role of training the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (#CTS) and the Iraqi Special Operations Force (#ISOF). In 2015, when I was at Al-Asad Airbase, the Iraqi Shiite militias there were led by #IRGC's officers.
One of my roles was to conduct counter intelligence (to see if any of the Iraqi soldiers were members of a Shia militia group or working with the #IRGC.
I first operated against the #IRGC in 2005 when I was working with the US government. Our role was to collect intelligence and interdict the proliferation of fighters and munitions from Iran.
I have first-hand experience of how the #IRGC has infiltrated numerous Shia militias groups across the Levant. Unding, training, and arming them with the intent of activating these groups when Iran requires proxy forces for either destabilisation or external support.
Iran has been planning for this very war since 2003. The IRGC was very open about this in 2015, calling the Iraqi Shia militias "our international force."
@potus and @IsraeliPM must understand this in any ground operation. They must factor the 100,000s of IRGC trained and loyal fighters in Iraq.
Here's the author with then #ISOF Gen. #alTamimi dining in #Erbil (May 2017). He had just been released from the hospital due to wounds inflicted by an RPG from al Baghdadi's militia in #Mosul. He was exiting his Humvee during the capture of a bridge in the city center. A half-step out of the vehicle saved his life but earned him a long chain of shrapnel along his body, already marked with a sort of fighter's barcode: wounds of every kind and shape. The #Tigris River at that stage was the border with the last portion of the city held by ISIS, and was therefore a constant kill zone. #ISIS fought hard and often used civilians as a shield. This forced Iraqi special forces to avoid indiscriminate bombing and to conquer house by house with bloody raids. Many of the Iraqi units engaged in Mosul suffered losses exceeding 50 percent of their personnel. The general had suffered dozens of attacks, as he was a favorite target of terrorists. Gifted with unparalleled courage, he was one of the most beloved and popular fighters in Iraq, along with #ICTS commander #Berwari. #Iraqi military in general is a very important topic but what went unnoticed here is that several months ago a commander of #ISOF (CTS) changed from Abdul Wahab to a relatively unknown guy and that change was pushed by #Iran.
#ISOF is one of best forces in MENA and it was [relatively] pro #US- The best friend we had in the region and very very powerful in #Iraq. And now it is gone.
