Every enduring idea can often be reduced to a simple principle.
Today's reflection distilled.

This thoughtful post by @osita_chidoka touches on an important development principle that I have long believed in.
One of the greatest misconceptions in public policy is the notion that development is simply a choice between government and the private sector.
History teaches otherwise.
The most successful economies have been built through strategic partnerships in which government creates the enabling environment, develops critical infrastructure, reduces early-stage risks, and opens new frontiers for private enterprise to flourish.
The goal is not for government to compete with business. It is for government to catalyse development.
That is precisely why, in the Vision Better Delta framework, we emphasise catalytic investments in areas such as power, gas, transport, industrial parks, ports, housing, logistics, skills development, and the Prosperity Garden Cities. These are investments that unlock private enterprise, create jobs, and expand opportunities for millions.
Markets create wealth.
But markets often need vision, infrastructure, and strategic public investment before they can thrive.
Development, therefore, is neither about ideology nor state ownership for its own sake.
It is about building the institutions and making the investments that allow people, businesses, and communities to prosper.
Government should never do what the private sector can do better. But it must never fail to do what only government can do.
Development is not a collection of projects.
It is the disciplined execution of a coherent strategy.
The real question is not whether we build roads, flyovers, railways, airports, ports, or industrial parks. Nor is it whether government or the private sector builds them.
The real question is whether every investment forms part of a coherent development strategy that expands opportunity, creates jobs, attracts investment, and ultimately improves the quality of life of ordinary citizens.
That is the conversation Nigeria needs to be having.
