It was also used by the Museum, Local Family History who implemented the false panelling in the 1950's that hid the tiled hall and its splendour until it was rediscovered in 1999. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

The very beautiful Tiled Hall was originally the Reading Room. In a review by The Yorkshiremen, they stated the room so magnificent, they feared that "people will be continually gazing up at it, instead of quietly reading the magazines and the newspapers!"

A snake once went missing and was only found many years later, dead by a plumber in basement pipework. #LeedsLibrariesCHT
After the Police department vacated the building in 1966. The Museum moved in and boarded up all of the walls and pillars. During their residency they had many 'live exhibits' featuring birds, reptiles and a snake. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

The Central library building was also the Headquarters of the police between 1935 and 1949 on the first floor. And our current Creative Digital Suite, Studio 12 was the Witness statement room. O errrr. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

It was home to the Reference Library of Leeds when it began in 1871 with over 14,000 books, and the Central Lending from 1872 with over 8,000 books. What can we say, we like our abode to be fancy. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

Before it was demolished in 1893, It was home to the Reference Library of Leeds when it began in 1871 with over 14,000 books, and the Central Lending from 1872 with over 8,000 books. What can we say, we like our abode to be fancy. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

The old Infirmary was built by John Carr between 1768 - 1771 at a cost of 4599. The Hospital was transferred to George Street in 1868. #LeedsLibrariesCHT

That’s all from the market! Time to wander across the city centre and visit the site where it all began – Leeds Central Library. See you there next week! #LeedsLibrariesCHT

And of course we can’t mention Kirkgate Market without bringing up Michael Marks & Tom Spencer, two enterprising young men who set up a penny bazaar there in 1884. Does anyone know if they ever made anything of themselves? #LeedsLibrariesCHT

On 13th December 1975 there was a massive fire which destroyed much of Kirkgate Market. Columns of smoke reached 100 feet into the air and the fire was seen up to 15 miles around, but fortunately there were no casualties #LeedsLibrariesCHT

One of the major changes that were made at Kirkgate Market was in 1907, when huge portions of the building were designed and constructed. Check out these architect’s plans #LeedsLibrariesCHT

Construction started on Kirkgate Market in 1875 and we’ve been adding and changing little bits ever since. One thing that hasn’t changed is the range of lively stalls selling tasty items #LeedsLibrariesCHT

And once the branch was open we started delivering storytime there, too! Remember the new storybuses we talked about last week? Here’s Librarian Zoe waiting to read some stories to children and get their feedback on our new storybuses #LeedsLibrariesCHT

Prior to opening in the market we ran some taster storytime sessions – here’s Children’s Librarian Rachel reading one of our favourite books: Shark in the Park #LeedsLibrariesCHT

Hello and welcome to our newest Library in Leeds, Kirkgate Market! This little branch opened October 7th 2019, situated right in the heart of our bustling historic indoor market #LeedsLibrariesCHT
