This mixed box of archival material dropped onto the desk in Conservation recently for repackaging. Inside was a surprise; a beautiful velvet banner (ACC/3696/16/003) with the fabric folded and rolled around its wooden hanging pole.

The six stages of Cellulose Acetate degradation - Stages 4 and 5
Stage 4: Surface becomes uneven, sometimes with small liquid filled bubbles.
Stage 5: Crystals appearing between the layers, as the plasticisers in the acetate can no longer be held.

The cover of a leather-bound book can be decorated in various ways, but one of the most popular is blind tooling. When the decoration is “blind”, the plain impression is made on the leather by a heated tool without adding gold or colour.

Knowing your grain direction is very important for #bookbinding.
Here, an example of a book affected by moisture. Due to improper grain direction in the boards, they've pulled up at the head and tail, creating a concave shape, which puts strain on the spine.
