It’s interesting to note that ARCHE Energy, the firm responsible for modelling used by the Nationals to claim “coal is cheaper than renewables” - is now saying that it was a “client-influenced” best-case coal scenario. ARCHE Energy say the work they did was for the client- Page Research Centre - which is a National Party aligned think tank. The CEO of ARCHE says the research was NOT designed to forecast the energy system or compare technologies under real market conditions. The research took in ‘best case scenario’. The research assumed coal plants would run at 91% availability. Right now coal is running at 61%. It assumes that coal plants would never have to switch off even when losing money. It assumes fuel cost way below market rate - based on coal that may not be economically viable. The ARCHE modelling also included full cost of building new plants - but that was ‘replaced’ with refurbishment costs - removing $100 billion in capital expenditure from the comparison. David Littleproud has used these dodged-up figures to claim coal is the cheapest energy source.
