Technical obsolescence is a big challenge facing magnetic and optical carriers (cassette tapes, cassette videos, open reel tapes etc.) of course, but in examining archives Cancy was also surprised how many plastics were associated with paper objects too! #MakingConservation

Rosemary Goodall is our next lightening talk, and she's sharing her experiences identifying and housing a pharmaceutical collection... they found around 370 items that needed housing under schedule or dangerous goods codes #MakingConservation
Celia Cramer is next up and her presentation is looking at how we can use spectroscopy to give context to natural history specimens... there's so much missing information about where specimens were collected, which is crucial information! #MakingConservation
Following on from the AGM MaryJo and Ainslee up to talk about the new @AICCM_OZ Sustainable Collections Wiki that is being developed. #MakingConservation
Floriana used neutron imaging to investigate the katanas, which requires the use of a nuclear reactor! Luckily they were able to use one at the OPAL Research Reactor. The resulting images of various heritage objects are incredibly impressive, we all want a go! #MakingConservation
Sue Gattenby and Floriana Salvemini are now presenting on non-invasive neutron imaging for the structural chracterisation of ancient Japanese katana swords! Famous for being flexible, strong, the forging process involved folding steel at least 50 times #MakingConservation
Carl Villis and Deborah Lau are now presenting Made in Melbourne: The development of MS3, a new generation reduced ketone varnish resin, a successor to the much missed MS2A! #MakingConservation
Determining the deterioration level is difficult with cellulose nitrate, but they found the samples separated at band 843, Elizabeth proposes that this might be a method for determining deterioration levels? Exciting stuff! #MakingConservation

Elizabeth Ann Carter is next up! Cellulose nitrate and cellulose acetate are very problematic in collections, not least because they can catch fire! Identifying them has been a big challenge, but could vibrational spectroscopy be used for the task? #MakingConservation
Candice Cranmer from ACMI is now giving a lightening talk! In the new ACMI there will be a glass-fronted conservation space that will make their work visible to visitors, and sometimes the space will be open to visitors too! #MakingConservation
