#Mastodonweek continues with the THIRD part of my track by track #HushedandGrim review - including the verdict!
Album out tomorrow on @RepriseRecords! @mastodonmusic
Peace and Tranquility kicks off Disc2 with a thrash riff! It settles into a mid tempo with Brann using a jazz beat. This becomes the prominent riff through the song, it doesnβt quite thrash again, which makes me sad.

You notice some fun things getting close up to paintings! Pictured is Peale's first gallery label: "With this article the museum commenced June 1784. Pres. by Mr. R Patterson."

Looks like these boys are sneaking off towards the mastodon...

Jefferson craved fossils.
This one was given to him by William Clark on his return from his famous expedition. On the way back, Clark stopped at Big Bone Lick, known for its abundance of fossils, to collect a specimen for Jefferson.

When Humboldt introduced himself to Jefferson, he made sure to mention one subject that would surely catch his attention: mastodon bones.
The two soon discovered they had much in common and became fast friends!

To Jefferson, the mammoth was a symbol of American greatness.
He included it in his "Notes on the State of Virginia," mostly to disprove the European belief that animals (and humans!) were smaller in America.

Jefferson was also obsessed with mastodons.
He did not believe in extinction, and thought that the mastodons were still alive, roaming the Great Plains, and told Lewis and Clark to look out for them on their expedition!

Even George Washington loved mastodons!
Word reached Washington's camp at Newburgh in 1780 that mastodon bones were dug up at a farm nearby, and Washington himself rode over to take a look.

How do you visually prove that a mastodon is really, really big?
Peale displayed the mastodon with the skeleton of a mouse, for scale, with the human visitors providing the mid-scale.

Dad got the last word.
In his monumental self portrait, Charles Willson Peale put his thumb on the scale--were the tusks pointed down, they would be peeking out of the curtain.

Titian Ramsay Peale decided to stay out the the tusk debate entirely, and left no room for them in his depiction. Tusks were likely still a tense subject at the Peale family dinner table.

A novel approach, seen here, was to have the mastodon tusks become like the horns of a steer, placed in the eye sockets of the skull. Surprisingly, this did not catch on.

The Peale kids won for a while, and in 1815 displayed the mastodon with the tusks down.

Tusks didn't always survive excavation, and the Peales argued over their position and orientation.
Charles Willson wanted the tusks up, but Rembrandt Peale fantasized about a carnivorous mammoth, hence the tusks down.

How do you put together a mastodon when you're not sure how everything fits together?
You might use an elephant skeleton like a set of IKEA instructions, as Rembrandt Peale did.
