Mount Adal and Nakfa: The Cradle of the Eritrean Revolution
Mount Adal and Nakfa are the birthplaces of the Eritrean revolutionaries of the ELF and EPLF.
The Eritrean independence struggle began in #MountAdal, Gash Barka, #Eritrea, when Hamid Idris Awate and other ELF fighters launched the first attack against the Ethiopian occupation forces on September 1, 1961.
The Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), also known as Shabia or Hizbawi Ginbar, was founded in the Sahel region of Eritrea in 1973 by Isaias Afwerki, Romodan Mohammed Nur, and other breakaway leaders from the ELF. It was headquartered in the town of Nakfa.
During the prolonged battles around Nakfa, the EPLF successfully repelled repeated Ethiopian offensives and, in the process, captured large quantities of heavy weaponry. These arms had been supplied to #Ethiopia through its security agreement with the USSR, which provided billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment (estimates range from $10–13 billion in total Soviet aid during the period).
The EPLF strategically retreated to the Nakfa area (in the Sahel) after the Ethiopian army received large-scale new Soviet weapons in the late 1970s. From this mountainous base, the EPLF waged an effective guerrilla war, taking full advantage of the rugged Sahel terrain and rural environment. This allowed them to wear down the Ethiopian forces and seize significant amounts of their Soviet-supplied weaponry.
After holding and defending Nakfa, the EPLF transformed into a mechanized conventional army. It went on to inflict major defeats on the Ethiopian army at Afabet in 1988, Massawa in 1990, and ultimately entered the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in 1991.

“If you want us to end our armed struggle, then you better lower the Ethiopian flag and raise up the Eritrean flag.“ - Awate (August 1961)
The appeal to the international bodies went unheard, #Awate began the revolution for independence on #MountAdal #Eritrea #BahtiMeskerem
