Isn’t it ironic that both of you have built a public persona around being on display — performing piety, positioning yourselves before an audience, cultivating visibility — and yet you speak as though you have transcended all of that? The contradiction is striking.

Courbet and Boudin: Two Views of the Sea and Sky
On view together on the 2nd floor of our permanent collection galleries are 'Waves' by Gustave Courbet and 'Beach of Trouville' by Eugène Boudin (through July 20).
In 1859, after seeing Boudin's paintings in Le Havre, Courbet traveled to Honfleur to visit him. Courbet admired Boudin's remarkable skies, while Boudin encouraged Courbet to paint the sea.
In the late 1860s, Courbet painted many coastal landscapes along the English Channel, including Trouville and Étretat. These shores also inspired artists such as Corot, Boudin, and Monet, who became known as the "Saint-Siméon School" after their gathering place.
In these two works, Courbet focuses on the power of the waves, while Boudin depicts people relaxing by the seaside, a subject he explored from around the 1860s. Although the paintings differ in date and setting, they reveal the artists' friendship and their shared exploration of the sea and sky.
This special pairing is on view through Monday, July 20. We hope you won't miss it!

"Waves" by Gustave Courbet has returned to the permanent collection galleries! Now on view in the New Wing, second floor.
And today marks the artist's birthday💐 — born in Ornans, France, in 1819.
🖼️ "Waves", ca. 1870, oil on canvas, 72.5 x 92.5 cm, Matsukata Collection
The sea was a world unknown to Courbet for a long time, as he had grown up in the mountainous regions of France. Beginning in the late 1860s, the painter began to engage seriously with this grand motif.
This work, depicting the stormy sea at Étretat in Normandy, was created around 1870. The churning sea occupies half of the canvas, and the dynamically rendered swells of great waves seem to surge forward beyond the edges of the frame.
Also on display on the second floor of the New Wing are Courbet's "Fox Caught in a Trap" and "Landscape with a Hunter."
Don't miss the powerful works of the painter who called himself "Courbet the Realist" — come and see them in the gallery!
