Who are the winners of 2026 #NobelMedicinePrize?
#KarlDeisseroth of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, #PeterHegemann of Humboldt University of Berlin and #GeorgNagel of the University of Wurzburg, were awarded the prize “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and #optogenetics,” the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet said Monday.

The #Nobel Assembly at #Karolinska Institutet has awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in #Physiology or Medicine jointly to #KarlDeisseroth, #PeterHegemann and #GeorgNagel for discoveries that turned a light-seeking alga into a switch for the living brain.
The citation reads: “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and #optogenetics.” The three will share 12 million Swedish kronor equally.
Optogenetics lets researchers turn individual nerve cells on or off with light, inside an intact brain, with millisecond precision. Before it existed, neuroscientists could watch brain activity or silence large regions. They could not pick one circuit, flip it, and watch behaviour change.
🎯 From pond water to a neural switch
The story begins with *#Chlamydomonas*, a single-celled green alga that swims toward light. In the early 1990s, Peter Hegemann, now at #Humboldt University of #Berlin, asked how that response could be so fast on the order of half a millisecond.
He proposed that one #protein both sensed light and opened a pore for charged ions. Around the turn of the millennium he joined forces with Georg Nagel, then at the #MaxPlanck Institute for #Biophysics in #Frankfurt and now at the University of #Würzburg. Nagel expressed algal genes in frog eggs and found the proteins the field had been looking for: channelrhodopsin-1 and channelrhodopsin-2.
Blue light opens these channels in a fraction of a millisecond. Ions rush in. The cell fires an electrical signal. In 2003, Hegemann and Nagel showed that the same gene worked in human and hamster cells. Any cell given the gene became light-sensitive. They had found the switch neuroscientists had wanted for decades.
🎯 Making it work in the brain
Karl Deisseroth, a psychiatrist and bioengineer at Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, saw the clinical stakes. Patients with depression, anxiety and other psychiatric illness had pushed him toward a harder question: which circuits actually cause which behaviours?
In 2005 his group put the channelrhodopsin-2 gene into cultured rat neurons. A flash of blue light made those cells fire on command. By 2007 the method worked in living mice: an optic fibre delivered light to a chosen patch of brain, and the animal’s behaviour changed. The technique was named optogenetics in 2006.
Later variants added proteins that silence neurons, and proteins tuned to different colours of light, so more than one circuit can be controlled in the same animal. In one landmark use, fear-memory “engrams” were reactivated in mice, linking a defined set of cells to a specific memory.
🎯 Why it changed neuroscience
Committee members described the result as a new dimension in understanding the brain. For the first time, researchers could draw a causal line from a chosen group of neurons to memory, pain, social behaviour, movement or emotion, rather than only a correlation.
The tool spread quickly. Labs used it to map circuits in healthy brains and in models of #Parkinson’s disease, #epilepsy, addiction and mood disorders. Clinical work has followed more slowly. In trials for retinitis #pigmentosa, a channelrhodopsin-like #protein is introduced into surviving retinal cells; light-emitting glasses then let some patients detect and grasp objects. Related ideas are being tested for epilepsy, pain and more precise cochlear implants.
🎯 The laureates
Karl Deisseroth was born in 1971. He earned his PhD in 1998 and his MD in 2000 from Stanford, where he is the D.H. Chen Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
Peter Hegemann was born in 1954. He received his PhD in 1984 at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried and is Hertie Senior Professor of Neuroscience at Humboldt University of Berlin.
Georg Nagel was born in 1953. He received his PhD in 1988 at the University of Frankfurt and is professor of molecular plant physiology at the University of Würzburg.

When light becomes a language for the brain, a new chapter in vision begins!
Heartiest congratulations to the 2026 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine #KarlDeisseroth, #PeterHegemann and #GeorgNagel - for their groundbreaking discoveries on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
Their work has transformed how we understand and control neural activity with #light, opening exciting possibilities for #neuroscience and the future of #vision.
For #TrilochanNetralaya, this is deeply inspiring: the future of eye care lies not only in treating the eye, but also in understanding the neural pathways that make vision possible.
From restoring sight to reimagining vision - the journey of science continues.
