#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Right in the heart of the leafy West Pollokshields Conservation Area on Glasgow’s Southside is Titwood Bowling Club which dates from 1890 and has a charming building designed by the good Victorian multi-generational Glasgow architectural practice, Clarke and Bell 👀👇🥰.
Unfortunately, it’s at the heart of a stushie at the moment as there is a planning application to build three covered Padel courts directly behind the bowling club and lots of local residents are concerned about the rapid fire gunshot-like noise of the balls bouncing off the screens around the courts. Therefore, the planning application has generated loads of objections.
It’s a masterclass in how not to handle this. The problems with noise generated by Padel games is well documented elsewhere so perhaps a pre-application consultation and including a noise study might have been a good idea to help tackle perceptions and address the neighbours’ concerns?
Pollokshields Community Council’s objection is a good one as they rightly point out that, as @theglasgowbell has also highlighted, Glasgow’s bowling clubs have a problem with sustainability and they need to diversify in order to survive.
The community council suggests Titwood Bowling Club instead look at a feasibility study which could address both issues and look at options while taking the community with them on this journey.
That is good advice and would be a worthwhile thing to do so perhaps is worth acting on 🤔🤷♂️?!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Strange to see a granite faced #PostModern office building in the Glasgow Central Conservation Area being painted black. Painting stonework is usually discouraged under supplementary guidance in part because it sets up a long term maintenance issue 🤷♂️!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: A tale of two lanes. KFRBS aka artist Keiti Forbes
has transformed Mitchell Lane with her joyful @GlasgowCoA 🥰 while the Merchant City House lane for @Unite_Student has been overhauled, again, but is as boring as ever 😴! Give it some welly please 🤷♂️!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Good street furniture vs bad street furniture on St Vincent Street. It’s great to see the installation of a new defibrillator but it would be nice if these redundant now vandalised telephone boxes cluttering up our public realm could be removed…🤔?!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Funny to stumble across a 1988 edition of the Glaswegian with a column about the Italian Centre: “…the first centre of its type in Europe” Heady days when Glasgow set the pace! Where are the Classical House developers of today to do the equivalent 🤔?

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: A Tale of Two Shopfronts 👀👇. Just yards apart, the much loved Dee of Trongate shopfront - a design classic which engages passers-by, and the new shopfront for The Social Hub which aims to divert people around the back by deadening the shopfront. 1/2

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Not often you get to walk down a new lane in the historic heart of a city but this is the newly opened Brunswick Lane which opens into what will ultimately be the new Candleriggs Square at the southern end of Brunswick Street in the Merchant City 👀👇!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: The scaffold has now dropped so the ‘B’ listed retained facade for 140-144 Trongate, which dates from 1875, has been revealed once more. You can see the extent of repairs including new stone carving and the reinstated cast iron balustrade…👀👇🥰! 1/2

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Interesting to see the new JP Morgan building. The public realm gives an idea of what the Argyle Street ‘Avenue’ will look like with rain gardens. Curiously flat architecture though i.e. look at the corner column which only faces one way 👀👇🤔! 1/2

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: our climate is getting wetter which is why we get localised flooding in places like Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson’s Walmer Crescent 👀👇! This is why we should look at replacing hard surfaces with rain gardens which will help slow rainwater run off…🤔

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: If you are in the West End today I’d encourage you to go & see the consultation on the potential demolition of Thomas Lennox Watson’s ‘B’ listed former Hillhead Baptist Church at 41 Cresswell Street. The event details here 👀👇

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow I’m enjoying seeing this new tower taking shape on the skyline of George Square as it’s being constructed. Fascinating to see the huge concrete panels being hoisted into place by the crane and how quickly the brick and glass curtain wall follows on 🤔!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Heading west on the M8 I noticed this new site under construction and thought “is that the waste management facility which split the Glasgow Urban Design Panel in 2012” and yes, it is. It’s flown under the radar but check it out as it is huge 🤔👀👇😮!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Trongate has been one of Glasgow’s great streets for centuries. It’s had tough times with gap sites, vacancies, Buildings at Risk and poor quality buildings which need regenerated but as this image shows all the bones of a great street remain 👀🤔🥰!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Building in an historic context is hard and you can see how the architects have tried to breakdown the scale and mass of the huge new Candleriggs development so it nestles into Trongate. The tower is meant to be capped by a tree. Will we get it…🤔🤷♂️?!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow The destruction of the Gorbals in the Comprehensive Development era was a huge mistake so it’s nice to see streets of buildings now reappearing. These townhouses by @StallanBrand are a good addition to New Laurieston and I’m loving the roof terraces 🥰!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: the proof is in the pudding but it’s great to see the vast gap site at the junction of two of Glasgow’s oldest & finest streets, Trongate and Candleriggs being infilled by buildings after being vacant for decades. I hope it brings lots of activity😉👍!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: Great to see the Beco Building, with its fun new bold red external stair and super scaled graffiti being rescued from #Scotland’s Buildings at Risk Register. The new stepped public (if private) realm will hopefully help activate the Barclay Campus🤔🥰!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: One of the pleasures of my daily commute walking into the city centre from the #SouthSide is seeing the transformation of Gorbals Street from dereliction into a proper urban street. It’s still got a way to go but what a difference 5 years makes👇👀🥰!

#PlanningStuff in #Glasgow: students living in the city centre deserve amenity too but sadly this lane connecting Queen & Miller Streets is a grim space when all it needs is good lighting, colourful paintwork, planting and benches to make it an enjoyable place to hang out…🤔🤷♂️!
