.@NickTroiano via @NPR: "If you're an independent-minded member of Congress, you're being basically hunted to extinction by the ideological flanks within both political parties." #PrimaryProblem https://t.co/aAPkkcWqWj
Give this @AsteadWH / @amyewalter conversation a listen. This is spot on: to fix democracy, start with the primaries. #PrimaryProblem
1/ Start with the primaries.
Walter's point: the system built to kill the smoke-filled room became its own kind of rigged — drowning in outside money, decided by the narrowest, most ideological slice of voters who show up.

.@caitlindewey explains the #PrimaryProblem perfectly:
"...just one in five eligible voters turn out for midterm primaries, and those voters tend to be whiter, older, wealthier, and more partisan than the electorate overall." https://t.co/SPDwjIemuy
Many thanks to @ChrisCillizza for highlighting the #PrimaryProblem in politics today - and more importantly, what we can actually do about it. https://t.co/vo3qAbRdwH
Too much focus is on which party is "ahead" in the redistricting wars.
The reality is that we're all losing. Less competition, worse representation, more government dysfunction.
One solution is fixing the #PrimaryProblem https://t.co/Omf0OyGP8D
Trump didn’t invent party primaries, but he’s better than anyone at weaponizing them for his own political ends
We have to fix the #PrimaryProblem
Indiana makes clear why unpopular things — like mid-decade redistricting — continue to happen in our politics: <10% of voters control all the power through low-turnout, party primaries.
Demagogues and special interests know this and have spent millions to weaponize it. This is the #PrimaryProblem in action.
The Republican state senators who refused to go along with the plot to rig this year’s mid-terms will go down in history as honorable public servants. Just like those who refused to overturn the 2020 election.
But we should not rely on such courage (in short supply!) to be the saving grace for keeping our republic. We need an electoral system that aligns representation & results with reelection.
We need to abolish party primaries and give a true majority of voters their voice.
To quote Milton Friedman: “People have a great misconception; they think the way you solve things is by electing the right people….The way you solve things is by making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right things.”
2026 was always going to be historically uncompetitive. But following the mid-decade #redistricting wars, six more House seats are safe in November - all from California and Virginia.
We're now up to 92% of House seats being decided in primaries this year #PrimaryProblem
Why are so many Democratic (and Republican) politicians so out of touch with the general public?
Because the general public doesn't elect them. Primary voters do.
Great description of the #PrimaryProblem @nytopinion https://t.co/4bXNsKl8cF
.@ChrisStirewalt nails the #PrimaryProblem and the most realistic solution: open primaries, like what California has, or no primaries at all.
Good work, if you can get it. That work being a member of a well-organized interest group, of course @thehill.

.@chicagotribune editorializes the #PrimaryProblem: if Illinois voters want to have a say in this year's elections, they should vote in the primary. By the time November comes around, all races will be decided. https://t.co/DSGWD5qrp2
.@ShaneGoldmacher: "What began as a fight over a single seat in TX has since spilled into halls of Congress, with potential implications for voting access nationwide."
The #PrimaryProblem is forcing @JohnCornyn to change his position on the #filibuster.

On today's episode of the @monacharen @BulwarkOnline show, @NickTroiano talks about:
-the #PrimaryProblem already playing out in this year's midterms
-a realistic solution to fix the doom loop: open primaries https://t.co/XE4L0MMPsc
.@DacePotas' @USATODAY column exposes an uncomfortable reality: originally invented to make elections more democratic, primaries have increasingly become inept at producing representative candidates. #PrimaryProblem https://t.co/zodpPQJ9JV
.@NPR covers the #PrimaryProblem
@NickTroiano: "We are about to enter a midterm election season that will be the least competitive of our lifetimes, which means that we will have, no matter who wins in Nov, the least accountable Congress of our lifetime." https://t.co/KSEijhgrhB
.@Noahpinion on the #PrimaryProblem: "Republicans win primaries not by aligning with the median voter, but by aligning with the median Republican voter — usually in an area that’s already right-leaning to begin with. The same is true of Democrats." https://t.co/ToxTyjGCZw
Spot on, especially with #2. @LuluGNavarro cites the #PrimaryProblem as a key driver of our broken politics
I’ve covered authoritarian regimes all around the world.
We know how we got here:
1. A Supreme Court that has given the Executive almost unchecked power
2. A broken political party system where the party in power refuses to act as a check on the executive and a leaderless (for now) opposition 3. A federal government that has been gutted of independent levers of power 4. A President who seemingly believes he has total authority to use crushing federal power and is emboldened and enabled by his cabinet.
5. An activated and angry civilian population that has no trust in institutions.
6. The use of federal forces in defiance of the will of states
7. A business and elite class that is largely willing to bear the cost of the chaos.
8. A weakened independent Press and an expanding propaganda network that profits from partisan alliances on the left and right.
Great roundup on the upcoming midterm season by @ShaneGoldmacher.
The near-absence of competition is shocking - only 36 districts are considered competitive @CookPolitical, meaning the other 399 (92%) will be decided in primaries #PrimaryProblem https://t.co/pFCLB2tJWU

Why would you assert your constitutional role as a co-equal branch of government when it's good politics not to?
Congress' "fast fade" is due in large party to the bad incentives of party primaries #PrimaryProblem @russellberman https://t.co/Q9Y9yQGsWd
Great reporting from @riley_rogerson on the lawmakers sticking around to fix Congress.
The best way to get a Congress that "rewards workhorses over partisan showhorses" is to fix the incentives thru reforming primary elections #PrimaryProblem https://t.co/1s5LQnnGGb
