Generating Functions (and #ProbabilityGeneratingFunctions in particular) are amazing. They have all sorts of applications to infectious disease and other biological invasion processes (invasive species, cancer,...)
A key result is that greater variance in the distribution leads to higher probability of extinction from a single introduction. With the major caveat that places where it doesn't go extinct have higher initial growth.
