After standing shut for half a decade, the Johannesburg City Library is finally OPEN again!!
For five long years, 1.5 million books, including rare and valuable Africana archives, sat locked away, gathering dust. This year, the library turns 90 years old, a true continental landmark and one of the largest public libraries in Africa. That such a vital space could be left dormant for so long is unthinkable.
This reopening belongs to the caring citizens of Joburg, heritage groups, civil society, and activists who refused to accept closed doors fighting shoulder to shoulder with @JoburgHeritage, Joburg Crisis Alliance, @JohannesburgIYP, Bridge Books, and many others.
In an age of disinformation, inequality in digital access, and shrinking public spaces, libraries are more relevant than ever. They are lifelines for learning, safe spaces for community, and guardians of our shared heritage.
Let this be a reminder: when we fight for what matters, we can bring life back to the heart of our city. ❤️🔥

I’m delighted to say that ‘An African History of Africa’ is now available in paperback and that it has been selected as @Foyles Nonfiction Book of the Month. Everyone is originally from Africa. This book is therefore for everyone.
Nat Nakasa (1937-1965) began his career as a junior reporter at Ilanga Lase Natal at the age of 17. He then joined Drum Magazine in 1957 after his reporting attracted the attention of Sylvester Stein of Drum Magazine. In 1963 he founded a quarterly literary magazine called 'The Classic'. Nakasa was accepted for the 1965 intake of the Nieman Fellowship, a journalism program at Harvard University. He applied for a passport & was refused & had to accept the exit permit instead, a one way ticket into exile. After completing his Fellowship, Nakasa seemed homesick. Unable to return to South Africa, he became depressed. On 14 July 1965, Nat Nakasa died by suicide when he jumped from his friend's seventh-storey apartment.

#ReadWriteAfrican Africa in Fact latest edition (Apr-June 2025) focusses on the continent's cities. According to the editorial, 17 out of 20 fastest growing cities (5%) in the world are in Africa.
One article in this edition highlights the role of wastepickers in our cities, which are 'drowning in their own waste', our consumption driven culture.
In Johannesburg alone, wastepickers sorting daily through our waste to recycle, bottles, plastic, paper, etc, number over 90,000 workers and they are increasingly organized, an initiative supported by the late Environmental Minister Edna Molewa.
