From starting a business to creating opportunities for others, Mercy Meki's journey is a powerful example of the ripple effect of investing in young women's economic empowerment.
After participating in the S(H)E Matters Initiative Transformative Leadership Training and business mentorship programme in partnership with @hivosrosa with support from @IrlEmbPretoria , Mercy gained the confidence and practical skills to launch a blanket-selling business with an initial investment of US$100. What began as a small enterprise has grown into a thriving business, with her profits increasing over time. Today, the business enables her to support her family, build savings, and work towards her dream of opening her own bedding shop.
Inspired to share the knowledge she gained, Mercy trained seven young women in entrepreneurship and business skills in Ward 2, Makonde District. The impact is already evident. Five participants are preparing to travel to Botswana to purchase stock for resale, one has started a perfume business, and another is earning an income as a hairdresser.
"The training changed how I see business. It gave me the confidence and practical skills to succeed, and I realised the best way to create lasting change is to share that knowledge with other young women," says Mercy.
Mercy's story demonstrates how investing in one young woman creates a multiplier effect. Through the S(H)E Matters Initiative, young women are not only building sustainable livelihoods and strengthening their economic resilience, but are also empowering others to thrive, expanding women's economic opportunities and strengthening young women's leadership within their communities.

This week, let Moleen Mavhunga's story remind you that your voice has the power to change your life.
For years, Moleen, a 29-year-old young woman with a disability from Zvimba District, operated a small business from her home, believing that local authorities would never listen to her. After participating in an IYWD Community Dariro, under the S(HE) Matters initiative, being implemented in partnership with @hivosrosa and supported by @IrlEmbPretoria , she gained the confidence, advocacy skills, and practical business knowledge to claim her rights.
In March 2026, Moleen formally approached the Zvimba Rural District Council and successfully secured an official market stall at Murombedzi Business Centre. Today, her business is thriving, her income has improved, and her courage has inspired three other young women with disabilities to seek market spaces of their own.
Moleen's journey is a powerful reminder that when young women are equipped with knowledge, supported through safe spaces, and empowered to advocate for themselves, they become agents of change in their own lives and communities. Economic empowerment is not only about earning an income, it builds confidence, strengthens independence, and enables women to actively participate in leadership, decision-making, and community development.
As we begin this new week, remember that every bold step starts with believing your voice matters. Your circumstances do not define your future, your courage to act does.
This Monday, choose confidence. Choose action. Choose to lead.

This Monday, we reflect on the power of young women’s leadership, collective action, and resilience in transforming communities.
On 13 May 2026, IYWD convened a Community Dariro Action Meeting in Makonde District under the S(HE) MATTERS Initiative, being implemented in partnership with @hivosrosa and supported by @IrlEmbPretoria, bringing together young women to reflect on progress, strengthen advocacy, and advance young women’s participation in leadership and decision-making spaces.
The gathering celebrated remarkable milestones, with seven young women successfully taking up leadership positions in schools, churches, and community structures. These achievements reflect growing confidence and determination among young women to lead despite ongoing gender discrimination and backlash against women in leadership.
A powerful highlight was one peer-led campaign against child marriage at a local school, which contributed to a significant reduction in school dropouts. Young women also continue to build solidarity and economic empowerment- equipping young women with business skills and opportunities.
The meeting also created space for young women to raise urgent community concerns, including drug and substance abuse, sexual exploitation in tertiary institutions, and lack of access to clean water affecting women’s productivity and participation. In response, participants developed concrete advocacy actions and commitments to continue engaging schools, communities, and local leaders.
This reflection reminds us that when young women are organised, informed, and supported, they do not wait for transformation, they lead it.

❤️SHE MATTERS: KATE PATERSON & BABY APRIL!❤️
'This loss has left devastation across magnitudes.'
Kate Paterson and one-year-old April were found dead on March 12 at Belivah in Queensland. Their partner and father is now charged with murder. Kate is the 14th woman killed this year and April is the fifth child killed in 2026. We lost 79 women to violence last year and 106 women were killed in 2024. More than 60% of these deaths were domestic violence.
"Kate at only 38 years old was a loving daughter, sister, mother, partner and friend," Kate's friend wrote on a GoFundMe for Kate and April's family.
"I cannot begin to explain the happiness of her finding her life partner and bringing her baby girl April into the world.
"Their families were ready to celebrate Kate’s and her fiancés wedding, along with celebrating April’s first birthday.
"Instead, they now have to live through the agonising nightmare of saying goodbye and laying both beautiful girls to rest."

❤️ABOUT THE COUNT❤️
I document all Australian women & children lost to murder, manslaughter, neglect and other unlawful acts regardless of perpetrator gender or relationship to the victim. This means not all women and children killed are lost to domestic violence. They are also killed by people known to them (ie friends) or by strangers. My work includes Australians killed overseas. Every death is documented at https://t.co/DW9BTHvSrM (link in bio).

Faith reflects on the strength and resilience of women who continue to rise despite violence and injustice. This Women’s Month, let’s honour their courage and keep standing for a future free from GBV.
