lies on the Berwickshire coast of Scotland, roughly fifty kilometers east of Edinburgh.

▶️ It is celebrated for Hutton’s Unconformity, a striking angular unconformity where nearly vertical grey Silurian greywackes are overlain by gently dipping red Devonian Old Red Sandstone.
The sharp contact reveals a missing interval of around seventy million years and gave James Hutton the field evidence he needed in 1788 to establish the concept of deep geological time.
▪️ The older rocks are Silurian turbiditic sandstones and siltstones, laid down in deep marine basins as continents closed during the Caledonian Orogeny.
They were intensely folded and tilted until almost vertical.
▪️ After mountain-building ceased, uplift and prolonged erosion planed off the highlands and removed all traces of Late Silurian and Early Devonian strata, creating a landscape of rugged relief.
▪️ In Middle Devonian times, rivers draining the worn-down Caledonian mountains deposited coarse continental sediments directly onto the eroded Silurian surface.
▪️ These red conglomerates and sandstones filled paleovalleys cut into the older rocks.
Later burial, gentle tilting, and eventual exposure by coastal erosion produced the dramatic cliff section seen today.
