This year one of our long-term #LDV team members @RoxVassie has been running various monitoring stations on #SkipwithCommon NNR on behalf of @UK_CEH, with the data feeding into a national data set on pollutants (using passive air monitors and soil solution sampling).
Thank you to @DarrenStarkey for the records, & to all of the other local moth trappers - great to see an increase in recorders & effort this year throughout the #LDV, #SkipwithCommon & wider areas - giving us a better understanding of the range of species present & abundance.
Several new moth species have been recorded in the #LDV area recently (after 30 years of trapping) inc. this stunning Scarlet Tiger at North Duffield, shortly followed by Red-tipped, Yellow-legged and Currant Clearwings, and several Lunar Hornet Moths. Amazing!
The first Emperor Moth of the year was recorded last week on the lowland heath of #SkipwithCommon NNR. It's always nice to record them each spring, such attractive moths β largely confined to the heathland in the Vale of York. Thanks to @DarrenStarkey for the record and image πΈ
Several @_BTO Lesser Redpoll recoveries have come in recently from birds ringed around the #LDV and #SkipwithCommon NNR last autumn (Sept/Oct), which have been recaught elsewhere (this April) inc. individuals to Nottinghamshire, Wiltshire and Surrey β 296 km to the south.
Great to confirm the presence of Palmate Newts on #SkipwithCommon NNR this week thanks to @DarrenStarkey, who has been helping to train some of our newer team members as they work towards their newt licences @froglifers
Our team have also been busy on #SkipwithCommon NNR recently carrying out boundary fencing repairs, to help out @EscrickPark and to keep the Exmoor Ponies, English Longhorn Cattle and Hebridean Sheep safe, all of which help with the management of the heathland via grazing ππ
Five Wheatears were also recorded near East Cottingwith yesterday morning, and the first Orange Tip and Speckled Wood were seen on the wing at #SkipwithCommon NNR on Tuesday, with a Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and Comma also recorded π¦ @nybirdnews
Great to have @froglifers back in the #LDV again this week running another Great Crested Newt training course, held between our NNR Base at Bank Island (theory session) and #SkipwithCommon NNR at dusk for the fieldwork - nice to see both NNRs being used for training and learning.

It's also been a good winter for both Siskin and Redpoll in the local area, especially the lowland heath and birch woodland of #SkipwithCommon NNR and the canal side alders along the Pocklington Canal. Thanks to Andrew Woodcock for these lovely images taken last week πΈ
Following a record of a Brimstone on Monday, the first Adder for the year was recorded by our team on #SkipwithCommon NNR on Tuesday (one of our earliest sightings) - great news given an apparent decline at this site over recent years π
Spring is on the way... exciting to get a record from one of our volunteers of the first male Brimstone on the wing at #SkipwithCommon NNR on Monday morning (six days earlier than last year) with a White-tailed Bumblebee also seen there π
Great to welcome a second team from FPCR Ecology to the #LDV and #SkipwithCommon NNR last week, to help with this winters ongoing work programme in maintaining the open heathland areas. Many thanks to everyone for their fantastic efforts ππ - in rather poor conditions! π§οΈπ§οΈ
Our latest @_BTO ringing recoveries inc. a young Chiffchaff ringed at #SkipwithCommon NNR (presumably on passage) on 01/09/25, which was then controlled by ringers just 24 days later, 701 km away in Trunvel, Treogat, FinistΓ¨re, France π«π· @nybirdnews
Earlier in the week our team were busy carrying on with our heathland management work on #SkipwithCommon NNR, this time supported by staff from FPCR Ecology - with time also spent looking for and finding evidence of Water Voles.
Another great day last week with our team of volunteers hard at work on #SkipwithCommon NNR - carrying on with our winter scrub programme. Nice to see good numbers of Redpoll still present on the Common, with Green Woodpeckers, Jays and Woodcock also seen @YorkBirding
Thanks to keen moth recorder @DarrenStarkey for some great records this week despite the weather β having found 17 Heralds hibernating in one of the old air raid shelters on #SkipwithCommon & 9 Peacock butterflies - amazing & just shows what can be found even in these conditions.
Our volunteer team from #SkipwithCommon NNR this week included Rowan and Bethan (both previous school placement students who have chosen to re join the team again this year), new recruit Ruby, and @RoxVassie, who were all hard at work clearing birch and Scots pine regen π²
