Some of the most expensive mistakes in #DataEngineering have nothing to do with #Spark, #Kafka, #Airflow, or #Snowflake.
They're usually much simpler.
❌ Trusting source data blindly.
✅ Validate schemas, data types, ranges, and record counts before processing anything.
❌ Using SELECT * in production pipelines.
✅ Explicitly select columns so upstream changes don't silently break downstream systems.
❌ Ignoring duplicate records.
✅ Create primary keys, deduplication rules, and idempotent pipelines.
❌ Forgetting about time zones.
✅ Store timestamps in UTC and convert them only when necessary.
❌ Treating NULL values as ordinary values.
✅ Measure, track, and investigate missing data.
❌ Joining tables without checking cardinality.
✅ Always validate row counts before and after every join.
❌ Building pipelines without monitoring.
✅ Implement logging, alerting, tracing, and anomaly detection.
❌ Performing expensive transformations too early.
✅ Filter, partition, and aggregate data as late as possible.
❌ Ignoring data lineage.
✅ Know exactly where data originated, how it changed, and who depends upon it.
❌ Assuming data is immutable.
✅ Prepare for schema changes, corrupted records, and unexpected inputs.
The interesting thing about #DataPipelines is that they rarely fail dramatically.
They fail quietly.
A chart changes.
A metric moves.
A decision gets made.
Millions of dollars follow.
Then someone discovers that a single column changed its format three weeks earlier.
That is why great #DataEngineers spend less time chasing complexity and more time eliminating uncertainty.
