At Stablecon NYC, our CEO Chris Maurice shared how #stablecoins are solving real-world challenges in Africa, from access to USD to seamless cross-border payments.
The tech is ready. Now it’s about liquidity, trust, and education.
TL;DR: In the West, stablecoins are programmable building blocks; in the Rest, they’re permissionless lifeboats. Ignore either side and you’ll miss the biggest FX and fintech leapfrog of the decade.
Just back from #Stablecon NYC—stablecoins are no longer a sideshow; they’re fast becoming the backbone of global money-movement. A few observations:
Stablecoin market cap just blew past $250 B—that’s a top-30 U.S. bank forged on-chain in under a decade.
Throughput? Ethereum alone settled $900 B+ in stablecoin transfers in April. Add Solana, Tron, etc. and you’re clearing Visa-scale volume every single month.
Biggest takeaway: the U.S. and the emerging world inhabit two very different stablecoin universes.
U.S. story → programmability. Builders are turning the dollar into an API: self-executing payroll, fraud-proof subscriptions, composable treasury rails. It is the BAAS story playing out. EVERYTHING IS A BANK.
Emerging-world story → permissionlessness. In Lagos or Buenos Aires the killer feature is simply access: instant, uncensored dollars for saving, sending, spending.
Economics diverge too:
• U.S. money-movement = zero-FX, razor-thin take-rates → you need mega-scale.
• EM orchestration layers own the FX spread + float—that’s the profit center, so they won’t outsource it. Operating margins far higher in the global south so now everyone is a tourist. I heard "I am just back from Africa" at least 10 times.
UX mirrors that split. Outside the U.S. three personas—/ saver, sender, spender—often live in separate apps. Americans expect to save and spend the same digital dollar in one wallet.
Why does USD₮ keep dominating? 1️⃣ Most real-world holders → everyone accepts it. 2️⃣ Deepest liquidity against BTC, ETH and local fiats. Liquidity is destiny.
Local-currency stables only hit escape velocity when they can tap USD₮’s ocean of liquidity—but the FX upside is huge. We’re still bullish on local stables precisely because that spread is worth capturing.
Expect a wave of new L1s chasing that prize as Western builders look south for product-market fit.
