City Power has advised that power supply has been partially restored following an unplanned outage affecting parts of Randpark Ridge, Sundowner, Northriding and surrounding areas.
The outage has been traced to a cable fault on the Quorn Distributor supplied from the Northriding 11kV Substation. A test branch team has been dispatched to locate the exact fault so that repairs can be completed and supply fully restored.

The replacement steel pipe sections have been taken to an off-site fabrication facility, where they are being cut, bevelled, welded and assembled into custom sections with the required fittings before being brought back to site.
Joburg Water has advised that this approach is intended to ensure a more precise installation and better quality control before the replacement pipe is installed.
Once the fabrication has been completed, the pipe sections will be transported back to the site for installation.
At this stage, Joburg Water expects the repairs to be completed tonight, after which the system can begin to be recharged. Water supply will, however, remain interrupted until the repairs have been completed.
Joburg Water has also indicated that it will issue an official update on its social media platforms at approximately 14h00.
I will continue monitoring progress and share further updates as they become available.

Work on the Knoppiesdoring pipeline repair is expected to resume again this morning.
Joburg Water has advised that additional areas have now been isolated in an effort to stop water from continuing to flow into the excavation, allowing the contractor to proceed with installing the replacement pipe.
Unfortunately, a significant amount of water has already been lost during this process.
There is an irony in the current situation: the very thing residents are waiting for — water — is the same thing preventing the repair from being completed. Until the flow into the excavation is stopped, the contractor cannot safely install the new pipe.

I am deeply disappointed to report that there has been yet another major setback with the Knoppiesdoring pipeline repairs.
The contractor has had to pack up and leave the site for the evening because there is still too much water in the excavation to safely install the replacement pipe.
The ongoing inability to properly isolate the water supply has prevented the repair from proceeding. In my view, Joburg Water is not treating this aspect of the repair with the urgency it requires. Without properly isolating the line, the contractor simply cannot complete the installation.
I have escalated this matter once again to senior Joburg Water management and made it clear that this continued cycle of delays is unacceptable. Residents have now endured days of disruption.
I will continue following up with Joburg Water and will provide further updates as soon as I receive them.

My further update from the repair site.
The replacement pipe has not yet been installed. Teams are still pumping water out of the excavation while preparing the new pipe by taking measurements and getting it ready for installation.
Joburg Water has indicated that the repair is expected to be completed by around 19h00. Based on the progress I have observed over the past few days, I believe it would be prudent for residents to allow an additional hour or so for the repair to be completed before the pipeline can begin to be recharged.
Once the repair has been completed, water supply is expected to return gradually overnight as the network repressurises. As with previous restorations, some areas are likely to receive water before others depending on their location and elevation.

Unfortunately, there has been yet another delay to the Knoppiesdoring pipeline repairs.
The contractor is once again unable to proceed because Joburg Water has still not been able to fully isolate the water supply to the damaged section of the pipeline. As a result, water continues flowing into the excavation, preventing the repair work from continuing.
I have escalated this matter to senior Joburg Water management and made it clear that this situation is becoming unacceptable. Residents have shown tremendous patience, but the repeated delays and lack of progress are simply not good enough.
It is also deeply concerning that there appears to be a lack of urgency and leadership from the ANC-led City of Joburg administration in ensuring that critical infrastructure failures such as this are resolved efficiently and without repeated setbacks.
I will continue to hold Joburg Water and the City's leadership accountable and will share further updates as soon as more information becomes available.

A replacement high-capacity pump has now arrived on site and has been deployed to assist with pumping water out of the excavation.
However, despite multiple isolation attempts, the flow of water into the excavation has not reduced as expected. This means Joburg Water is still trying to determine where the water is coming from and why it continues to enter the pipeline.
At this stage, the teams remain uncertain whether there is another source feeding the line or whether a valve has failed to isolate the section correctly.

Unfortunately, there has been yet another delay to the Knoppiesdoring pipeline repairs.
I have been advised that the large pump being used to pump water out of the excavation has broken down. As a result, work has been interrupted while Joburg Water attempts to source another high-capacity pump from elsewhere in Johannesburg.
Joburg Water has also advised that fire hydrants in the surrounding areas will be opened to assist in draining the network and reducing the flow of water into the excavation, allowing the repair work to continue once the replacement pump arrives.
At this stage, it feels like I could write a book on the number of setbacks and unforeseen challenges this repair has encountered. 📓🤦♂️

Residents in additional parts of Sundowner and Randpark Ridge may experience low water pressure or no water today as a result of the major burst that has been affecting Boskruin and parts of Randpark Ridge.
Joburg Water has advised me that they have isolated supply from the Boschkop, Honeydew and Olivedale reservoir systems to allow the repair to proceed. I am still trying to establish whether the Randpark Ridge Reservoir has also been isolated.
Teams are currently pumping water out of the excavation so that the contractor can gain access to the damaged pipeline and continue with the repairs.
I know this situation is incredibly frustrating, particularly given the length of time residents have been affected. I am continuing to press Joburg Water for answers, monitor progress and push for the repairs to be completed as quickly as possible.
I'll share another update as soon as I receive further information.
