The debate is ignorant because people keep lumping multiple genres under “New Jack Swing” without actually understanding the sound, which is disrespectful to Teddy Riley, who created it. NJS is a very specific sound that requires you to actually pay attention to the production. It doesn’t just mean fast-paced R&B. You can’t seriously debate whether Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis or Babyface did it better if you don’t understand what New Jack Swing is in the first place. And you’re never going to understand it if people are telling you shit like Control is a New Jack Swing album. That is a Minneapolis Sound album. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’ signature sound is Minneapolis. People need to stop trying to discredit Teddy Riley because he may be a little weird. It’s corny The term New Jack Swing was created by Barry Michael Cooper to describe Teddy Riley’s infusion of Hip Hop and 80s r&b, a sound that was the soundtrack of 80s crack era Harlem. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Babyface did not have this specific sound, until afterwards when they tried to mimic it.
