In 1960, IndianOil took over the Antop Hill oil installation in Mumbai from the Indian Army, marking the start of its marketing operations.
Beginning with just three installations—Antop Hill in Mumbai, Willingdon Island in Kerala, and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh—IndianOil laid the foundation of a strong nationwide oil marketing network.
What began as a strategic handover soon grew into an expansive infrastructure that has continued to fuel India’s progress—then, now, and for generations to come.

A moment that changed India’s energy landscape forever.
Throwing it back to 17 August 1960, when Mr B. Arora, IndianOil’s first Managing Director, opened the valve for the unloading of the inaugural red oil cargo.
The Soviet tanker MV Uzhgorod arrived at Mumbai’s Pir Pau jetty with 11,390 tonnes of diesel, marking IndianOil’s bold entry into the petroleum market.
And the impact was immediate. IndianOil’s entry challenged the dominance of foreign oil majors, compelling them to slash diesel prices for bulk users by as much as ₹8.80 to ₹35 per KL.
A first step that made a lasting difference to India’s energy journey.
