Settling back against the wall, Bernie listened to the receding siren until it eventually disappeared, which was when he heard the first murmuring of voices. Evidently he wasn't the only one seeking shelter in the Black House that night. With the big knife held in front of him in the ready position, he turned his head first one way then the other in an attempt to discover where the voices were coming from, but all was quiet. Had he imagined it? He knew he heard voices all the time, but these were... The sound of a hacking cough echoed around the house followed by heavy footsteps on the floor above. Whoever they were, they were upstairs. Bernieβs immediate reaction was to bolt through the door, and he was half way out when he heard the distinct buzzsaw of rotor blades overhead. He was trapped. Worming his way back inside he pushed himself up against the sideboard, hoping that it would hide him from anyone within. With his heart pounding and every sense straining, he waited until all was quiet
After a while he began to relax. He could do this; all he had to do was keep quiet. Police helicopters couldnβt fly for ever; all he had to do was wait. Bernie didnβt know when it was that the light from the upstairs window disappeared. One moment it was there; the next it was gone. It took him a while to realise that this could only happen if somebody, or something, was standing at the top of the stairs blocking it from view. Could they see him? Were they there now, standing at the top of the stairs staring back at him? Bernie held his breath, not daring to move. Once again he began to think he was imagining things when a loud cough echoed around the stairwell. Somebody was very definitely there. A split second later a match flared, illuminating the stairs and giving Bernie a brief glimpse of a dishevelled figure of a man lighting a cigarette.
The match quickly died, once again, leaving Bernie and his companion in the #dark. Bernie could only watch as the bright orange tip of the manβs cigarette bobbed around at the top of the stairs. It was a strange cigarette, that every now and then popped and sparked, revealing a snapshot of a ghostly face in the dark. Please God, make him go away, please... But apparently God wasnβt listening as Bernieβs worst nightmare was about to be realised when the man started to descend the stairs.
Kill him.
I donβt want to.
A loud snort echoed around Bernieβs head. What else are you going to do?
He was right, Bernie had no choice. He tightened his grip on his knife, at the same time becoming aware of a thick, pungent smell assailing his nostrils, almost causing him to cough out loud. Fortunately, this was when fate intervened, with an unseen womanβs voice calling out something unintelligible from above.
βAlright, alright,β the man shouted back before muttering a string of expletives under his breath. Bernie could see his shadowy outline now, swaying back and forth on the creaking staircase as he took a long drag on his cigarette. The woman called out again, louder this time and more agitated.
βI said fucking alright,β the man yelled back angrily before stomping back up the stairs to disappear out of sight. Almost immediately an argument broke out, which ebbed and flowed for what seemed an age before silence once again reigned and Bernie could finally relax.
