The Ancient Egyptian cat goddess Bastet was a goddess of love and laughter, the softer side of lioness Sekhmet "who fills the ways with blood". Both are aspects of Hathor, the cow of heaven. Bastet's cult centre was at Bubastis. #TheHiddenMatrix #MythologyMonday
It's very rare to have a cult image of a local god like this alongside the inscriptions and remains of his shrine. A groove in the neck suggests the statue may have worn a torc. "The name defies interpretation," writes Miranda Green. #TheHiddenMatrix
Antenociticus, a British god worshipped by Roman troops. The stone head and other statue parts were found in a temple outside a Roman fort at Benwell, by Hadrian's Wall, as were three altars bearing his name. Great North Museum, UK @GNM_Hancock #RomanBritain #RomanArchaeology
Charm for the Bite of a Mad Dog, from the 1804 pocket-book of John E. of Weobley, Herefordshire:
Fuary, gary, nary,
Gary, nary, fuary.
Nary, fuary, gary.
Write this on a piece of cheese, and give it to the Dog.

Until one day in 415 BCE, when the citizens of Athens woke to find that someone had hacked the genitals from every Herm in the city. Athens had been symbolically castrated, and its divine guardian defiled. See Keuls, The Reign of the Phallus, for the full story. #TheHiddenMatrix
The Trundholm Sun Chariot is a Bronze Age cult object discovered in Denmark in 1902. In Neolithic times, the sun traversed the sky in a boat. Here the wheel and the horse provide the sun with a chariot instead. #MythologyMonday #TheHiddenMatrix
In Germanic and Northern mythology Sceaf or Scef (Sheaf) was a child cast away over the ocean asleep on a sheaf of corn in a boat without oars. He brought fertility and reigned as a great king; his son was Beow (Barley). #MythologyMonday #TheHIddenMatrix https://t.co/MW3ZSWXpGh
Aglibôl was a Moon god. Though Malakbêl was identified with Sol by the Romans, the Palmyran Sun god was Yarhibôl. The Greeks identified Malakbêl with Hermes, and the name means Messenger of the Lord. Malakbêl may have assumed a sun/vegetation god role over time. #TheHiddenMatrix
Multicultural Rome: Latin, Greek and Palmyran texts on a dedication in Rome by Caios Aurelios Heliodoros Adrianos, originally of Palmyra, 'to the gods of the fatherland Aglibôl and Malakbêl'. The two Palmyran gods are shown shaking hands #RomanItaly #RomanSyria #RomanArchaeology
@arrroberts Istet Woiche's Annikadel: The History of the Universe is 160pp long. Human beings come into the story on p.159. #TheHiddenMatrix
Before the sun was envisaged traversing the sky in a horse-drawn chariot, it sailed across the sky in a boat. The golden crescent at the bottom of the Nebra sky disc c.1600 BCE is such a solar bark, alongside the sun, moon, stars and solstices. #MythologyMonday #TheHiddenMatrix
The wise and kindly centaur Cheiron was tutor to many Greek heroes, including Achilles and Jason. The other centaurs (apart from Pholus) were savage creatures, inclined to get drunk and wreak havoc, as in their battle with the Lapiths. #TheHiddenMatrix
"The Golden Arm" is one of the most frequently recorded English folktales, often told by nannies or maids to happily frighten children in their care. George Sturt in A Small Boy in the Sixties (1927) records a version told by Eliza in the 1860s. #FolkloreThursday #TheHiddenMatrix
This #LittleRedRidingHood was etched in 1904 by Gottfried von Kempf, with the German title Rotkäppchen. #TheHiddenMatrix #fairytales
Here's another instance of a German Symbolist mixing and matching mythologies. In Rudolf Jettmar's etching Zum Licht! (To the Light) the crucified Christ is lifted to heaven by a Valkyrie. #TheHiddenMatrix
"A man may be your brother but he should pay for his cheese." Serbian proverb. #FolkloreThursday #TheHiddenMatrix

For today's #FolkloreThursday I shall choose some random proverbs from Selwyn Gurney Champion's Racial Proverbs (1938, today this would be called Proverbs of the World). "Better an egg today than a hen tomorrow," Albanian. #TheHiddenMatrix @unbounders
