@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A4: Enrichment provided is definitely an area where I want to grow. I have been incorporating more of that this year but with large class sizes, I need to continue to work on this and do even better with it.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A3: In Chemistry, math and conversion knowledge is a must. Taking some time during the first 9 weeks to build a better understanding of these will benefit my students all year.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A2: I think using our school colors of purple (that stands out more) for correct answers and yellow (that stands out less) for wrong answers would be a way of encouraging strengths as opposed to weaknesses.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A1: We do a great job of encouraging SCA leadership which gives student voice. We also have had a principal's advisory which again allows for student voice outside the classroom.
@MrDenvir A1: We can intentionally create opportunities for a diverse population of students to have a voice in decisions that impact the school culture. Modeling similar opportunities in the classroom could benefit students. #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A2: Identity and Confidence. These things have been shaken in our teens lately, particularly the ones mentioned in this question, so connecting cultural references to learning is of utmost importance.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A3: I like the bubble maps. I love the idea and will use it as we move more into our stoichiometry unit.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A1: Creating a warm & inviting atmosphere in the classroom by greeting students at the door and taking the time to see how each one is doing can help with this I believe.
@MrDenvir A5:#THSBookStudy Growth! All day long! Mastery implies an ending or completion point…learning has no real end and is never complete.
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A5: I believe there is room for both mastery & growth with assessments. My philosophy has changed over the last few years; I do look for growth more than I did, but I also look for mastery with my hard science of chemistry.
@MrDenvir A3: Implement practices that are designed to meet both the academic and social needs of students. Ensure your actions and your words show that you believe in their potential. #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A4: I am going to have to agree because we have let this standarized test thing get way out of hand and Jackson makes some great points in this chapter about it. I do feel that we are all beginning to understand better that they just simply do not work.
@MrDenvir Find a way to acknowledge and embrace linguistic diversity through the discussions in the classroom. Model an acceptance of the differences that make for a rich learning environment. #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A4: Students need to "buy into what is being taught". As an educator, I need to constantly find where my subject "is found" in life & make it applicable for them. Foods & Medicine for me. "why should I care" is what I try to answer.
@MrDenvir A4: Build positive relationships! Get to know our students to optimize opportunities to utilize student interests and abilities. The more we know about our students, the better we are able to tap into their full potential. #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir A3: I never considered the distinction between the two terms before reading Jackson’s work. I agree with her in that “low achiever” implies the set capability of a student. “Underachiever” suggests that there is an opportunity for growth and improvement. #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir Q4 Revisit the idea of incorporating modern and diverse texts to encourage engagement and embed SEL into lessons on a regular basis to build community #THSBookStudy
@MrDenvir #THSBookStudy A3: My moto has always been "there is power in my words" with students. Low-Achiever sounds powerless and underachiever sounds like power has not been tapped into yet. Thus, I agree with Y. Jackson in this distinction.
@MrDenvir A3 Underachieving definitely implies untapped potential and students becoming empowered and achieving #THSBookStudy
