The hero of Lake Erie had sailed to Venezuela on a diplomatic mission to negotiate a treaty protecting American merchant ships from harassment. After successfully completing his mission, Perry contracted yellow fever and died while returning home. His life was brief, but his victory on Lake Erie made him one of the most celebrated naval officers in American history.
