4/4 When in large molt, albatross can’t fly efficiently. Thus, they may be vulnerable to the local food supply at their molting grounds. This vulnerability may be reinforced by fidelity to molting grounds and should be considered in conservation management. #TrackDist #WSTC4
3/4 Albatross live a long time, and memory and learning likely influence behavior. Our tracked birds tended to return to their molting grounds year after year. And, older birds had smaller home ranges, suggesting more directed movements than younger birds. #TrackDist #WSTC4
2/4 We used GLS tags to follow albatrosses across their 5-month migrations. During this time, they invest energy to molt flight feathers – which ultimately boosts flight efficiency. We found molt extent influences activity levels but not regional habitat use. #TrackDist #WSTC4
1/4 What drives migration patterns in long-lived seabirds? Certainly the environment does, but what is the influence of age and the need for self-maintenance? To explore this, we followed the post-breeding migrations of two albatross species from @HawaiiReef. #TrackDist #WSTC4
4/4 Since anomalous migratory routes facilitate genetic mixing, influence population persistence, and determine risk factors, documenting their prevalence is critical to developing conservation strategies. #WSTC4 #TrackDist

3/4 Our study is the first to describe inter-oceanic migrations of Brown pelicans and other coastal species; it also establishes that their migratory paths overlap spatially with massive terrestrial wind farms in the southern Isthmus. #WSTC4 #TrackDist
2/4 Using color bands and satellite tags, we tracked brown #pelicans breeding in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
To our surprise, 8% of banded pelicans crossed the 200-km Tehuantepec Isthmus from Atlantic to Pacific; tracking confirmed that they did it repeatedly. #WSTC4 #TrackDist
1/4 We think of #seabird populations as migrating within ocean basins, with landmasses acting as barriers to movement. But what happens when the birds break the rules we set for them? #WSTC4 #TrackDist
#WSTC4 #TrackDist Thanks for following & the intro @Cocotross! 😀
This @_BTO work was led by @KittiwakeGirl & @DEBALMER. We welcome questions & look forward to hearing from anyone interested in this research.
@Cocotross Yes! I'm so excited about the possibilities it offers. Couldn't be possible without the hard work and collaboration of a lot of people in all the groups involved in this, so I am really lucky I get to "play with everyone's toys"! #WSTC4 #TrackDist
4.Large-scale studies are essential to understand dynamics at sp level, which is key in the development of effective management & protection plans in win areas too. Only through international collaboration and data sharing can we collate such extensive datasets. #TrackDist #WSTC4
3.#TrackDist #WSTC4 In win areas, among sp segregation (↑MC: structure) contrasts with the mixing at sp level (↓MC: no structure). Some implications for conservation: what works for 1 sp might not work for others & impacts in 1 win area might affect several breeding populations
2.We collected >1K yearly tracks of 28 colonies & identified wintering areas for each one. Using https://t.co/sE7Yzu9KgO we calculated the strength of #MigConnectivity for each sp. We adapted the method to estimate segregation between sp by using sp as origin. #TrackDist #WSTC4
1.Pelagic seabirds like Scopoli’s, Cory`s & Cape Verde shearwaters spend most of their time offshore & perform yearly large-scale movements. However, conservation efforts focus mainly on breeding areas, while wintering distribution is neglected in conservation. #TrackDist #WSTC4

This research is in its infancy, 2018 fieldwork planned. Long-term aims include expanding project, collaborating with international researchers, forming a volunteer network to monitor #ArcticSkua in Scotland & a Species Action Plan. Want to be involved? 😀

Foraging distances during incubation were longer than expected - one bird went as far as 212km. Tracks during chick rearing were much shorter: max. 71km. Here, tracks from a successful nest with a GLS & GPS tagged male #ArcticSkua:
