Trump’s remark about Putin and Russia having lost 51 million people in WWII, which “it won,” echoes one of Putin’s favoured narratives - but it’s misleading.
Here’s why:
🔸It wasn’t Russia alone. It was the entire Soviet Union that fought and won, including all 15 republics. The Ukrainian SSR was one of them.
🔸Nearly 7 million Ukrainians fought in the Red Army. Millions never returned home.
🔸Some 2.4 million Ukrainians were deported to Nazi Germany for forced labor.
🔸Ukraine was a major battlefield: 714 cities and 28,000 villages were destroyed. So were 419,000 industrial facilities.
🔸330,000 cultural artefacts were looted from Ukraine.
🔸The world recognised Ukraine’s massive contribution by granting the Ukrainian SSR membership in the newly founded United Nations in 1945.
🔸And let’s not forget: Putin wasn’t even born during WWII. To say he “lost his people” is not just misleading - it’s absurd.
Reducing the Allied victory to “Russia’s” win erases the sacrifice of millions across the USSR, especially Ukraine. History must be remembered truthfully and not rewritten for propaganda.
