Ai Driven NPCs in the #UnderpunksRPG
- You'll never see Durgan's backstory appear in game, but its enough to prompt an unlimited supply of short responses to your interaction with him in the Black-markets of Ratropia.
#ChatGPT on-demand... is definitely not the most economical way to handle this. It would be cheaper to run the prompt across several #LLMs once and store a long list of curated quotes that get randomly chosen.
Certainly easier for a Team Lead to approve.
But, I like the idea that, over time, a Player can build a relationship with the NPC where they would get to piece together a much longer life history of the character, who may even drop a little secret that can be followed up on.
I'm not talking about long conversations that have nothing to do with the plot or the players progressions. Instead, I am experimenting with a hybrid of "on-rail" dynamic responses with unpredictable #AiDriven preamble.
One where you (the player) are not prompting the LLM... The hidden Backstory and some guidelines are, but it can be influenced by your stats and current activity.
Eg. "Nice sword you have there, shame you don't have the STRENGTH to wield it, you sure you wouldn't like a gun?"
As an #IndieGameDev, the "potential" is exciting but I think we are still some way off the concept of - living NPCs inhabiting a #AAAgame . Specially with big game studios needing to lock down a consistent and reliable product.
For now we can enjoy the #aiHype and Tech Demos that may get superseded before they even make it to adoption.
