Getting vaccines to the people who need them most takes years of planning, investment and coordination. Manufacturers need to know how many vaccines countries are likely to need, while countries need vaccines that are affordable and available at the right time. For more than 20 years, Gavi and its partners have worked together to make vaccine markets work better for lower income countries. By bringing countries’ demand together and working closely with manufacturers, they have helped improve supply and make vaccines more affordable. But the landscape is changing. Tighter funding, shifting demand and pressure on manufacturers can make reliable supply harder to maintain. At the same time, new vaccines and efforts to expand regional manufacturing need early and sustained support. Looking ahead, our strategy through 2030 will take a more targeted approach. It will balance affordability with reliable supply and the long term health of vaccine markets, while helping prepare for the next generation of vaccines, including those needed for outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics.
