YONKERS ARTIST: Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr. (August 7, 1862 – April 25, 1932) was a leading American pictorialist photographer and lifelong Yonkers resident.
INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM: At the height of the Gilded Age he won international prizes, photographed high-society figures, published some of the earliest photographic picture books, and helped found what is now the Hudson River Museum.
DADDY WAS A YONKERS INVENTOR: He was born in Yonkers to Rudolf Eickemeyer Sr., a Bavarian immigrant and prolific inventor whose firm (Osterheld & Eickemeyer) produced hat-making machinery and electrical devices later absorbed by General Electric.
The younger Eickemeyer trained as a draftsman in the family business. In 1884 he bought his first camera to document his father’s patents; he quickly saw artistic possibilities in the medium even though his father disapproved of photography as a career.
His first major success came in 1890 when he won 11 medals at the Yonkers Photo Club lantern-slide exhibition.
Over the next decade he collected more than 100 medals worldwide.
In 1894 alone he took 16 medals in 10 exhibitions, including the Royal Photographic Society’s Albert Medal for the rural scene Sweet Home.
In 1895, after his father’s death, he left the family firm, joined Manhattan’s Carbon Studio, and—together with Alfred Stieglitz—became one of the first two Americans elected to London’s elite Linked Ring Brotherhood of art photographers.
Eickemeyer excelled at both landscapes (Westchester County farms, woods, and winter scenes) and portraits.
He favored straightforward compositions that used natural light and setting rather than heavy soft-focus or painterly manipulation.
Critics praised his versatility.
His best-known portraits include studies of his wife Isabelle Hicks and, most famously, the 1901 series of model and singer Evelyn Nesbit, especially the image of her in a kimono reclining on a polar-bear rug (often called Tired Butterfly or In My Studio).

He also photographed opera singer Mary Garden and actress Lillian Russell.
He published three illustrated books—Down South (1900, with a preface by Joel Chandler Harris), The Old Farm (1901), and Winter (1903)—that helped popularize the photographic picture book at modest prices.
He later worked with Campbell Art Studio and Davis & Eickemeyer on Fifth Avenue, produced commercial work and Kodak instructional material, and lectured widely to amateur clubs.
Unlike Stieglitz, he had no objection to mixing art photography with commerce.
In Yonkers he remained deeply involved in civic and artistic life.
He served as a founding commissioner of the Yonkers Museum of Science and Arts (now the Hudson River Museum), which holds more than 200 of his prints, and he donated hat-machine models invented by his father.
In 1929 he gave a large body of his finest work, medals, and equipment to the Smithsonian Institution.
The following year he judged an international Kodak contest alongside Thomas Edison and others.
He died in Yonkers at age 69 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Today his photographs are held by the Smithsonian, the Hudson River Museum, the Getty, and other collections.
Once as prominent as Stieglitz among contemporaries, he is now remembered as a technically gifted pictorialist who made photography both artistically ambitious and accessible to amateurs.
