1/2A large-scale and potentially game-changing process is unfolding on the front lines: the Russian army has begun withdrawing anti-aircraft missile systems from forward positions. While this doesn't affect infantry or drone operators, dismantling the anti-aircraft shield is the first and almost inevitable step toward a complete abandonment of the positions. So where are these anti-aircraft missile systems now?
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy (whose statements are often dismissed as propaganda, but when verified, prove almost 100% accurate, as he values his reputation as a reliable source), the anti-aircraft missile systems are being redeployed to three key locations:
1. Moscow (which is entirely expected).
2. The Kerch Bridge.
3. Valdai. You'd think it's the second-largest city in Russia, St. Petersburg, but no. This is Valdai—a city of luxurious dachas and residences. The elite prefer to cover their summer vacations, leaving thousands of soldiers on the front lines unprotected.
The Trap Slams Close.
It's important to understand that this isn't a voluntary move by the Russian leadership, but a forced response to the protracted trap Ukraine has been setting since the beginning of the conflict, which is now tightening. Massive strikes on logistics, Moscow, and Crimea have created an insurmountable dilemma for Russia: weaken the front or damage its own image domestically. The choice was made in favor of maintaining the illusion of security.Every time #Ukraine destroys air defense systems in #Crimea, Russia takes systems from other areas to fill the gap. Ukraine destroys them again. This cycle clearly demonstrates priorities: propaganda prevails over actual military strategy. The consequences of such decisions are already critical:Fuel shortages have begun in Crimea because trucks simply can't get through.According to experts, the Moscow Oil Refinery will remain idle until 2027—and this has occurred at the very peak of seasonal fuel demand.
The End of the Era of Russian Glide Bombs?
For a long time, neither side enjoyed air superiority. Russia's main offensive trump card was glide bombs, dropped from aircraft under reliable air defense cover, without entering the risk zone. Now that the air defense systems are being dismantled, this cover is becoming unreliable. Furthermore, this is happening precisely at the moment when Ukraine is beginning to use its glide bombs and is preparing to receive Swedish Gripen fighter jets. The window of opportunity for a breakthrough is widening every day, and Russia is losing its main offensive mechanism.
Nightmare for the Front
Ukrainian drone operators are already reporting that they are flying virtually unhindered in the occupied territories behind the lines. For the ordinary soldier in the trenches, the situation becomes hopeless: in addition to the traditional shortage of supplies, the last hope for safety disappears. Without air defenses, there will be no supply of water, food, or ammunition. The motivation to hold positions plummets, and abandoning them becomes the most logical outcome. And if Ukrainian ground robotic systems, supported by air power, enter the battle, the front could collapse even without a massive general offensive.Russia has found itself in a classic zugzwang. Strengthening the air defenses of major cities and dachas leaves the front vulnerable. As soon as the front begins to collapse due to this vulnerability, the air defense systems will be forced to panic and return to the front lines, which will once again open the skies over cities and logistics hubs. And the cycle will repeat. And the greatest irony of this whole situation is that the transfer of air defenses to cities does not even guarantee their safety. The famous recent photograph of an exploding oil tank with its lid thrown into the sky was not the result of a Ukrainian drone strike, but a direct hit by a Russian anti-aircraft missile that missed and destroyed its own infrastructure.
