#What I don’t understand is why they don’t address the ' the ELEPHANT' in the room! The boy has been sexually assaulted by a 'family member' it’s obvious it has caused a lot of trauma & the boy needs help/intervention .. has that family member been charged?
Or is 'he or she' still lurking around? ..

Inside Australia's toughest job
Toddlers ingesting meth, knife threats - it's all part of a regular day for frontline workers in one of the country's most, secretive, but important lines of work.
✍🏽Lauren Novak, *Social Policy Editor
The case report begins like so many others: social workers have raised safety concerns about a pre-teen boy living with his mother in the suburbs.
But what comes next is unexpected.
“Mum has expressed fear that (her son) is going to hurt her.”
Reading from the case notes in a steady voice, #Ashleigh, a senior Department for Child Protection (DCP) worker, goes on: “Mum is fearful because (her son) has been violent in the past.”
It’s a sad, and disturbing, scenario. But those working in child protection must be prepared for anything.
Seated around a meeting table at one of the department’s busiest offices, Ashleigh and her colleagues have already discussed reports of a father slapping his young son across the face in public, a teenager who had to call the police on his dad and sisters who feel trapped at home with an explosive and neglectful mother.
The Advertiser is able to share these details after receiving permission, for the first time, to shadow DCP staff for the day.
Authorities hope that pulling back the curtain on a system usually shrouded in secrecy – and often under fire – will give South Australians a better understanding of what those on its frontline face.
There are ground rules – we’re not legally allowed to identify children in state care, and have had to leave out many identifying details.
*A photographer and I needed a Working with Children Check to even enter the DCP office, tucked away on a suburban street, where we are ushered into a meeting room.
Perched in the corner, I listen as the group of seven women and two men discuss reports to be assigned for follow-up.
The case of the boy and his mum is one of the more complex for the day.
#The boy, who had been #sexuallyassaulted by another family member, has aggressive behaviors and suspected neurodivergence.
His mum lives with disability and struggles to maintain authority in the home.
The *non-government organisation which had been working with them – and reported concerns - says it “can no longer mitigate the risk” in the household.
#Ashleigh, who is a practice leader at this DCP office, tells the room that SA Police is involved. There’s a discussion about bringing in disability support.
Then the case is handed to a team leader to follow-up.
#342 red flags, every single day
Every day hundreds of reports like these pour in via the statewide Child Abuse Report Line.
Horror stories and false alarms
“So, we had a toddler ingest methamphetamine,” Ashleigh, 33, begins.
“They presented to hospital with some weird symptoms and conflicting stories as to why. It was assessed further and found there were drugs in the home, within reach of the child.”
I wait, and she continues:
“We also had a toddler with a severe chemical burn. The child ended up in hospital and, again, differing accounts of that story. It was suspected that drugs were being made in the home.”
