On International Women’s Day, I call on governments and women’s rights organizations worldwide to pay attention to the severe human rights violations against women in China! In China, anyone who chooses to resist injustice and defend their rights faces brutal repression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Women, however, are often subjected to the most extreme forms of persecution. My 72-year-old mother, Xu Dongqing, suffers from severe heart disease, and my sister has reached stage 4 kidney disease. For over a decade, they sought justice through legal channels without success. With no other options, they traveled to Beijing to petition against the authorities’ large-scale fraudulent land seizures, the use of hired thugs for forced evictions, and the illegal actions of the police and prosecutors. As a result, they became targets of government persecution—repeatedly beaten, kidnapped, and denied access to medical care in an attempt to silence them. In October 2024, under direct orders from the Jiangsu authorities, my mother and sister were unlawfully detained and subjected to prolonged torture in the detention center. •My mother suffered a severe knee injury and could not walk on her own. She needed daily pain medication but was denied treatment. Due to gastrointestinal damage, she was unable to eat for more than ten days and had to rely on IV drips to survive. •My sister was subjected to four days and nights of shackling torture, an extreme form of physical abuse. She went on hunger strike twice in protest, was sent to the hospital in critical condition, but was forcibly taken back to the detention center for further inhumane mistreatment. Her health deteriorated rapidly, yet the authorities refused to provide the necessary medical treatment and medication. Cases like my mother’s and sister’s are not isolated—countless female petitioners in China face similar persecution and abuse. This vulnerable group urgently needs international attention and support.
