Did you know Blastoise wasn’t originally Squirtle’s final evolution?

• Have you ever noticed how weirdly different Blastoise looks from Squirtle and Wartortle? The sleek cannon-toting tank completely breaks the fluffy-eared, swirling-tail family theme.
• In early Red & Blue development, Wartortle was supposed to evolve into a much more graceful sea-turtle that perfectly continued its design.
• The tiny pixel sprite in the bottom right is an official pixel sprite for the original games. That was the real planned evolution.
• The big artwork is a non-official image showing how majestic that scrapped Pokémon could have looked.

Fans even nicknamed it “Totartle,” but that name was never used by Game Freak. Game Freak scrapped the entire elegant wave-turtle design at the last minute and swapped in Blastoise because they wanted something more “epic” for a starter final form. The ultimate starter swap… and it happened right at the start of the franchise.
