The Glasgow Necropolis...

In the 1950s, children claimed a vampire with iron teeth stalked the nearby Southern Necropolis. The children said the vampire had killed and eaten two boys, and it was said to come out at night, prowling among the graves.

The Necropolis has earned a reputation as one of Glasgow’s most haunted spots. Tales tell of a spectral woman in white drifting between headstones, rarely seen, but never forgotten to those that do.

Funeral processions once crossed a sandstone bridge over the Molendinar Burn, fittingly known as the Bridge of Sighs - symbolizing the passage from life to death as mourners entered the city of graves.

The Glasgow Necropolis...

Scotland’s finest Victorian architects, including Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and J.T. Rochead, left their mark here. Their elaborate mausoleums and obelisks make the Necropolis as much an open-air museum as a burial ground.

Tucked away near the lower slopes lies the old Jewish enclosure, holding just a few dozen graves. It’s one of Scotland’s earliest Jewish burial grounds and a poignant reminder of the city’s diverse 19th-century population.

Around 50,000 people have been buried in the Necropolis since its creation, yet only a fraction - roughly 3,500 monuments, still stand above ground. Beneath the grass and paths lies layer upon layer of unmarked history.

The site was once known as Fir Park, a wooded estate belonging to the Merchants’ House of Glasgow. In the 1830s, it was transformed from a tree-covered hill into the ornate resting ground that overlooks Glasgow today.

St Mary's Church Lowdham...

The building itself sits in a shallow hollow, west of the main village street, near Cocker Beck, which occasionally floods. This is one reason why the churchyard is slightly raised.

Some older villagers reportedly told stories of church bells heard ringing faintly on stormy nights. With no one inside the church when heard, could it have been the wind through the louvres, or something else?

St Mary's Church Lowdham...

Sir John de Lowdham's effigy is shown in chain mail with his sword and shield, and his feet resting on a lion.
The effigy is among the best preserved 14th century knightly monuments in Nottinghamshire.

Local tales sometimes link the effigy of Sir John de Lowdham, to ghostly sightings of a figure in armour seen in the south aisle or churchyard at dusk.

St Mary's Church Lowdham...

Renowned Gothic Revival architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, restored the church in the mid-1800s. His work was typical of mid-Victorian ecclesiastical taste, seeking to 'purify' medieval churches of Georgian alterations.

St Mary's Church Lowdham...

The church's octagonal font, carved in stone and dating from 1290, remains in use.
For centuries it would have been used for baptisms, making it one of the oldest liturgical fixtures still serving its original purpose.

St Mary's Church Lowdham...

The west tower is the oldest visible part of the building. Its lower stages date to around 1170-1200, showing late Norman features. The tower originally supported a short pyramid roof.
