His name was Bert Atienza. He was 77 years old.

He and his wife Josephine had been married for FORTY-TWO YEARS and on Sunday, June 7th, they went to church.

Then they stopped at the Walmart to do their grocery shopping.

Josephine says a 17-year-old Black female employee came through with a heavy cart and nearly slammed into her.

No "excuse me." No apology. Nothing.

So Bert did what husbands do, he spoke up for his wife.

In his wife's words, he told that girl: "You almost hit my wife with your heavy cart, and you did not even say excuse me or apologize to her."

Josephine says the teenager then THREW A CAN at them as they walked away. It missed.

The elderly couple, not wanting any trouble, just kept shopping.

Minutes later, that girl's PARENTS showed up at the store, found the 77-year-old man and beat him to de*th.

"They crowded my husband, one of the adults hit him in the face. He fell down on the floor. I was terrified. I don't know what's going on."

It didn't take long for the ABC to jump on this like a seagull on a chip, but what's inaccurate with her claim?

The Aborigines had no permanent dwellings, little pottery to store water/foods, no tamed beasts of burden to plough, no agriculture, no written language, no mathematics.

They were a primitive race. There's no shame in that. That's just the way it was.

A harsh environment meant a nomadic lifestyle following food and water, hence there being no point in permanent dwellings. There were neither horses nor bullocks to plough fields and, even if they did, only poor grain crops to harvest. The land was harsh and forbidding of agriculture. And written language had not developed as it did around 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia.

This doesn't mean they didn't have culture. They did, and language as well, in up to 200 dialects. They had rituals when it came to boys becoming men and hunters; scarification; corroborees with dances and songs, cave paintings, 'songlines' that acted as maps to food and water (modern-day mnemonics, as it were), stories of creation of geographical features, etc.

The problems come when people like Bruce Pascoe want to write apologias for Aborigines, based in sheer fiction, as if to say: 'Hey, we weren't that primitive, We had villages of up to 1,000 people and grain stores; systems of government and even voting and democracy; etc."

If there were 'villages of up to 1,000 people, where are the archaeological remains? Why didn't early settlers commandeer and take them over? Where are the remains of the grain stores? How could you have systems of government, without writing names and counting votes?

All of these things have made some think that Aborigines prior to colonisation were more sophisticated than they were. They weren't. And saying so is not racist. It's that 'Truth Telling' everyone seems to want, except when the truths don't suit their narratives.
