While the NCAA didn’t ramp up random testing until 90, many schools including Iowa ramped up early and it wasn’t just “go pee in the cup”. In ‘88 I had to completely strip down with the tester standing there watching me physically urinate in the cup.

We are in a whole new era and the coaches don’t have the complete control of decisions they once had.

It’s very possible that going into the season, the plan was five specific dates and that was it. In that scenario, it doesn’t matter.

Iowa had many freshman wrestling unattached in that tournament. Dru Ayala, Estrada, K Voinovich and several others were all unattached. Freshman can’t wrestle unattached in first semester events.
