Ottawa is again taking nearly $1 billion from the public-service pension fund and moving it into general revenues, after last year’s $1.9 billion transfer. Combined, that is almost $3 billion taken from a fund funded by public servants and the government.

This is wrong. The surplus came from the plan’s investments and from contributions by the people who work for the federal government. Roughly half of those contributions come from employees. When the fund does well, the government treats the excess as its own. When it does poorly, taxpayers must top it up. That is not a partnership. It is a one-way street.

The law allows this once the funded ratio exceeds 125%. Legal does not mean fair. Workers paid in expecting strong performance to strengthen retirement security or ease future contribution pressure. Instead, the surplus is being sent to the Consolidated Revenue Fund “while next steps are considered.” Those next steps almost certainly include other government priorities.

The consequences are predictable and damaging.

First, trust is being destroyed. Public servants are told their pension is fully protected while the government skims the upside. That message is not lost on current employees or on people the government wants to recruit.

Second, it sets a dangerous precedent. If Ottawa can treat pension surplus as ready cash, other employers will notice. The principle that pension assets exist primarily for plan members is weakened each time this happens.

Third, it creates perverse incentives. Strong returns are now partly captured by the government rather than left in the plan or shared with contributors. Over time that changes how the plan is managed and how surplus is viewed.

Fourth, it is politically and fiscally short-sighted. Taking money from a well-funded pension plan to ease short-term budget pressures does not solve the underlying fiscal problems. It papers them over while poisoning relations with a large part of the federal workforce.

Pensions are not a government piggy bank. They are deferred compensation earned through years of work. Moving nearly a billion dollars out of the fund because the law allows it does not make the action right. It only makes it easier. The cost will appear in lower trust, higher labour tension, and a weaker sense that the rules apply equally to everyone.

This is Dominic Barton, the guy Carney just appointed as the CEO of Invest Canada.

FALSE: The TRC report never documented anything close to 215 unaccounted for or missing children during enrolment at the Kamloops’ residential school.

This is one of many reasons why the sensational 2021 claim warranted immediate scrutiny from the journalists now apologizing five years later for failing to do so, and the others yet to admit they fell short.

It’s painful and concerning to watch BC’s Attorney General, NDP MLA Niki Sharma, avoid and deflect from actually answering Aaron’s excellent questions about criminalizing citizens and journalists who discuss the need for transparency and accountability regarding profitable policy-shifting claims, such unmarked, clandestine graves.

All Canadians deserve the truth on matters like this. IMO, Niki Sharma’s refusal to acknowledge this amid calls to criminalize such scrutiny makes her no friend of reconciliation.

Attorney General Niki Sharma is pushing to criminalize so-called “residential school denialism,” but she will not define what that actually means.

When asked basic questions about what speech would become a crime, she talked about “finding a balance” and refused to draw a clear line.

If the Attorney General cannot define the offence, she has no business asking Canadians to accept jail time for speech.

There is a difference between inciting hatred or violence and debating historical claims. The first is already illegal. The second is protected debate. Blurring that line threatens Charter rights, journalism, and open inquiry.

Civil liberties groups have warned that this kind of vague law would chill legitimate discussion and risk putting people in prison over comments and posts. The NDP should specify exactly which changes to the Criminal Code they have been lobbying Ottawa to make.

Free expression is the foundation of a free society. The NDP’s approach is reckless, and British Columbians deserve better than an Attorney General who will not define the crime she wants created.
