Building a rapport with students is so very important. During the spring school closure, I had an easier time getting students to complete work online than other teachers did. #643Su20wk3#HS#HowHS
When going from face to face instruction to online learning, teachers cannot convert their lessons they have to transform them. What were some ways you did this in your class? #643Su20wk3#HS#7BigIdeas
Typical planning, preparation, and development time for a fully online university course is six to nine months before the course is delivered. K-12 educators were expected to do this almost immediately. #643Su20wk3#HS#RemoteVsOnline
Everyone involved in this abrupt migration to online learning must realize that these crises and disasters also create disruptions to student, staff, and faculty lives, outside their association with the university.

@krollpatrol I had never heard anything about any of these laws except FERPA. All the other ones were new to me. It is crazy how quickly we could violate these laws with some of the online choices we make for learning.
@SloanTymrak This really is a good idea!! I cannot tell you how many conversations I have had with frustrated parents about accessing the LMS being used. I had to walk several people through it via Zoom calls.
@WKristina2020 Kristina - I totally agree. I find something really cool and I use it for a while. The kids love it and their test scores increase from previous units but I always wonder was it the technology used or was the content just more interesting to them.
@Ashley_Childs1 Ashley - I think it goes from more of a distribution and retrieval to an interaction and communication because younger kids require help doing their work so parents have to retrieve the info from teachers where older students can interact and communicate on their own.
@Ashley_Childs1 Ashley - I was wondering the same. If we return to in person learning this fall do we keep using our current system to get kids more familiar with it and the different resources they have available to them?
@krollpatrol Jim - I am not sure they have ever been evaluated in our district. I am wondering though if they will let us continue with our current system in the fall or make us learn a new one if we do not return to face to face instruction.
@SloanTymrak Each week on Fridays, I give my students a printout of missing assignments in my class. They then have until the next week to get it in or I will call their parent. I teach 12th grade so I try to make them accountable first.
Communicating home about missing assignments led to improved GPAs, higher math test scores, and student engagement. Good communication is key for student success. #643Su20wk2#HS#LMSschool2home
@ErikPoole6 I am a special education teacher and I have 24 students on my caseload who's parents I talk to regularly. I email some parents daily. Some kids have a google doc that teachers fill out everyday. I do not really have a straight answer. It just depends on the kid.
Student information collected or maintained as part of an
online educational service may be protected under FERPA, under PPRA, under both statutes, or not protected by either. Is it just me or is this really confusing? #643Su20wk2#HS#StudentPrivacy
Schools and districts should always be as transparent as possible with parents and students about how the school or district collects, shares, protects, and uses student data. #643Su20wk2#HS#StudentPrivacy
It is important to know which online education systems are being used in your district. This will help school officials learn which systems are effective and help foster informed communication with parents. #643Su20wk2#HS#StudentPrivacy
Communication between schools and home is either one-way (webpages or newsletters) or two-way (email or phone call between teacher and parent). Are you a frequent user of one or the other or both? #643Su20wk2#HS#LMSschool2home
Communication between school and home is very for establishing a strong school community. It positively impacts family involvement, academic performance, and attendance. #643Su20wk2#HS#LMSschool2home
