The word is spent. It no longer names a specific regime that built death factories. It just means "person I oppose."

The history is even worse than the slur. The Nazis did not set out to exterminate "all Semites." They set out to exterminate Jews. At the same time they hosted the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, raised Muslim Waffen-SS units, and treated Arab nationalists as allies against the British and the Jews.

Calling Jews Nazis is not a mix-up. It is the inversion.

When every disagreement is Nazism, you have no word left for the people who actually built the camps.
