Raiders of the Lost Ark was made in 1981 and took place in 1936. If they did a remake next year with the same time gap it would take place in 1981. Yea, you're THAT old.
English is full of “lexical gaps,” words that are implied to exist but don’t, because we borrowed a bunch of words from Latin but not other, related words. Somebody made a chart to show it↓
SOUND ON. You’re hearing the first howl of a dire wolf in over 10,000 years. Meet Romulus and Remus—the world’s first de-extinct animals, born on October 1, 2024.
The dire wolf has been extinct for over 10,000 years. These two wolves were brought back from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed by Colossal from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years. This moment marks not only a milestone for us as a company but also a leap forward for science, conservation, and humanity. From the beginning, our goal has been clear: “To revolutionize history and be the first company to use CRISPR technology successfully in the de-extinction of previously lost species.” By achieving this, we continue to push forward our broader mission on—accepting humanity’s duty to restore Earth to a healthier state.
But this isn’t just our moment—it’s one for science, our planet, and humankind. All of which we love and are passionate about. Now, close your eyes and listen to that howl once more. Think about what this means for all of us.
And there we have it! We might now know the purpose of and who funded the Nazca lines. (Thanks, AI!)
To review, there's an old, informal line network used for navigation. You walk up a trail, you see a relief. The number of these known just blew up due to AI.
“One small catch for humanity”
Here’s my composite image from IFT5, the moment rapidly reusable rocket booster technology was successfully tested for the first time.
In future classrooms on Mars, this will be in their history books.
Available in print for a short time.
There’s politics and there’s metapolitics.
Politics is about the struggle to control the apparatus of the state.
Metapolitics is about creating a society where the politics is healthy for our civilization.
We need a growing economy, trustworthy institutions, earnest discourse, and a population that buys into the res publica. None of it will happen through divisive politics, through the supposed triumph of one side over the other.
There are a lot of politicians. Be a metapolitician.
The cognitive tradeoff hypothesis—the idea that short-term memory traded off against language skills—has no basis in fact.
The evidence for it was apparently exceptional chimp performance in a memory game, but when humans also train for the game, they do even better than chimps.
