UNDP in Somalia and BBC Media Action Somali
launched a new initiative to strengthen conflict-sensitive journalism in Somalia. Forty journalists from Banadir and Hirshabelle have begun training as part of a 12-month programme that will reach 120 journalists nationwide, focusing on accurate, balanced and responsible reporting, fact-checking, media ethics, misinformation, journalist safety, and the role of media in peacebuilding, reconciliation and social cohesion.⤵️

Our Regional Security Analyst, @SeraGaid, joined The Horn, a podcast series by the @CrisisGroup, to discuss Somalia’s evolving security landscape, the possible end of UNSOS, and the growing shift toward bilateral security partnerships.
In our recent policy brief, No Time to Drift, Balqiis Insights argued that a negotiated transition compact was the most feasible path for managing Somalia’s security transition. That option may now be narrowing.
What comes next for Somalia as the country approaches another security transition deadline?

SRS Welcomes Safe Recovery of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich and Calls for Transparent Investigation.
Mogadishu, Somalia —Safe Reporters of Somalia (SRS) expresses deep relief at the safe recovery of Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich, who was found alive near Masinga Dam following a harrowing nine-hour abduction.
Kiprotich was reportedly intercepted and abducted by armed men along the Gilgil–Nakuru road on September 1, 2026, before being released and abandoned by his captors in the early hours of the following morning.
SRS strongly condemns the abduction and considers it a grave attack on the safety of journalists and the fundamental principles of press freedom across East Africa.
“The abduction of Alex Kiprotich is a deeply troubling attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists across East Africa. We stand in full solidarity with Alex Kiprotich, his family, and the Standard Group. Regional authorities must conduct a prompt, impartial, and transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” said SRS Spokesperson Hanad Ali Guled.
SRS stands in full solidarity with Alex Kiprotich, his family, and the entire Standard Group team during this difficult and unsettling period. An attack on one journalist is an attack on press freedom as a whole.

#SOMALIA : Six million people in Somalia are facing acute hunger, with nearly two million children at emergency levels, as severe drought, conflict and falling humanitarian funding deepen what the UN describes as one of the world’s worst malnutrition crises.
Somalia and the African Union have a very tight timeframe to determine how AUSSOM, the AU mission in Somalia, will continue or conclude.
It is important to be clear, though. Under the current circumstances, this is not about a successful transition but rather a dignified, managed exit. In this paper, @MustafeGaboobe and I outline what a managed transition would require, while cautioning that the scenarios presented are far from assured.
Eighteen months of warnings to both Somalia and the AU have not resulted in a credible contingency plan. Even now, these remain hypothetical pathways unless matched by genuine Somali leadership, political consensus, and the will to act.
