Will be offering a brand new class in Biochemical Techniques this semester. My first textbook in this area, purchased in 1982 is in tatters, but I still use it! What should sophomores in college know about such things? Let me know if you feel strongly about something!
Congrats to my daughter Emma for her successful PhD defense at Iowa State University! Based on her date of birth, Emma was my second PhD student. Based on my feelings, I'm just a proud Dad. You go Dr. Helm!
First fall semester in over a decade without a class to teach! The reins of BCHM4115 have been handed over to Profs. Kylie Allen (@KylieAllenVT) and Dan Slade (@TheSladeLab). Wish them well...tough semester to start something new.
I need to change my username and image icon!
What's in your hemp oil? This year we performed LC-MS analysis of hemp oils to see if stated levels reflect content. Six hemp oils bought on-line were tested for CBD (cannabidiol) content. Do you think stated [hemp oil] and [cannabidiol] contents correlate? Short answer---No.
Looking forward to providing a sustainable strategy for supporting, maintaining, and enhancing University shared research infrastructure! @VTresearch

How big should your research group be? It appears to depend on what you are after.

"Large teams develop and small teams disrupt science and technology"
Started at VT 26 years ago today. Some thoughts:
1. "Startup" was $15K--still use the vacuum pump it bought.
2. Current lab costs $300K/yr to maintain.
3. Have VT t-shirts as old (and older) as most students at VT.
4. Instructed over 2,500 students.
5. My office is still a mess.
