From Washington to Seoul, people protest at power's doorstep.
The BJP can't treat protest space as a favour. Yet CJP activists were jailed after unfurling the Tricolour at Jantar Mantar.
The last time I remember Indians being jailed for waving the Tiranga at a public place was under colonial rule, when foreign rulers saw us as inferior and treated us as such.
Waving the Tricolour at Jantar Mantar in a peaceful protest is not a crime. Jailing youth for it is an act of cowardice.
Students. Youth. Journalists. The INDIA bloc. Different banners, one cause. All protests are one: citizens demanding their constitutional rights.
Jantar Mantar belongs to the people of India. We will reclaim it.
Activist Saurav Das (@SauravDassss) questions the police response to demonstrations demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, arguing that peaceful protesters should not be treated as threats to public order.
Das alleges that protesters have been beaten, injured and detained, and claims that Mumbai coordinator Pranay was tortured in police custody. He also raises allegations of mistreatment of women protesters and independent journalists.
Pointing to what he describes as a 36-day record of peaceful demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, Das invokes the constitutional right to protest and demands that authorities provide designated protest sites.
He further alleges that young people are being prevented from registering as voters and questions why the government is unwilling to meet a delegation to discuss their concerns.
With demonstrations taking place in several cities, Das says peaceful protests will continue across the country.
