COLLAGEN PLAYBOOK
Collagen production decreases as you age causing wrinkles, sagging skin, and joint pain
Collagen is the most abundant protein in humans, and most people have no idea what it is. All you need to know about collagen ⬇️
What is collagen?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body (~30% of all protein), and is important for many structures including
- skin
- joints
- ligaments
- tendons
- bones
Here are some of the benefits ⬇️
SKIN HEALTH
Collagen is important in maintaining "firmness" in skin and aids in hydration of skin cells. Wrinkles are literally caused by a lack of collagen.
Collagen also aids in would healing
TENDON HEALTH
Tendons are composed mainly of collagen fibers, meaning proper collagen is important for maintaining well-oiled tendons
As you age your collagen production decreases, which is why your dad has bad knees
This can be slowed by proper diet and consumption of collagen
GUT HEALTH
Collagen aids in maintaining a proper gut lining
Bad gut lining means leaky gut
Leaky gut means toxins in the bloodstream and lost nutrients
Consume your collagen
CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Nobody really talks about this, but collagen contributes to the structure of blood vessels maintaining their elasticity and strength, which can help regulate blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health
These are the main functions of collagen in the body, but how can you consume it?
Let's break it down
⬇️
Collagen contains the amino acid glycine, which is important for:
- Protein synthesis
- GABA (calming neurotransmitter)
- Sleep quality
- Glutathione (detoxification)
- Digestion (gut lining support)
AMINO ACID BALANCE
Traditional diets include nose to tail eating: skin, connective tissue, bone, and organs. In the west, we have moved to primarily muscle meats (breast, loin, chop) which lack the conditionally essential amino acid glycine, instead containing methionine
An improper glycine to methionine ratio can cause issues in the body
-inflammation
-oxidative damage
-sleep issues
-join issues
-metabolic stress
Aim for a 2:1 Glycine to Methionine ratio
For example:
100 g of chicken breast
= 4:5 Glycine to methionine ratio (not ideal)
Vs.
100 g of beef arm roast (slow cooked)
= 2:1 Glycine to Methionine ratio (perfect)
COLLAGEN AND GELATIN
Gelatin is produced when connective tissue is slow-cooked (pot roast, bone broth, stews, braised meats)
Gelatin is the cooked form of collagen, meaning it is partly hydrolyzed and easier to digest than pure collagen
HOW TO CONSUME COLLAGEN
The easiest way to get enough collagen is bone broth. @coookwithchris has a great recipe here:https://t.co/3oiohnyi3g
However, my personal favorite collagen-rich meal is a pot roast
- Cheap cuts of beef (shanks, arm roast, round roasts)
- Splash of bone broth
- Carrots
- Potatoes
- Crock pot on low for ~10 hours
Prepare in the morning/overnight and come home to un-borified beef that's healthy
You can also supplement collagen powder, which is highly digestible because it is hydrolyzed (like gelatin)
Make sure to get a grass-fed collagen powder to avoid heavy metals in some brands. I use @vitalproteins
Add to anything (unflavored powder). Smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, coffee
VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is crucial for hydroxylation of collagen
The enzymes that make amino acids proline and lysine usable need vitamin c in order to work properly
When these amino acids are broken down, they directly improve collagen chains in the body via stability and cross linking
You see these symptoms in scurvy (vitamin c deficiency)
- Weak connective tissue
- Joint pain
- Poor wound healing
Eat an orange every once in a while, and bring some vitamin c out for your long voyages
Moral of the story is add some variety to your diet. The chicken and rice days are over, prioritize nose-to-tail eating.
Use this information to make yourself and others healthier. Godspeed
